Match report
Having played on some dependable Ongar tracks in recent weeks, skipper Tom defied his vice skipper's usual plan of bowling first and decided to bat having won his third toss in a row.
It looked an unwise decision as after a steady start Tom was on the way back to the pavilion having been bowled around his legs by the left armer and debutant Matt Reynolds was bowled by ext first teamer Adams.
Paul Stolworthy started in his usual attacking manner and motored to 15 before being bowled by Adams. At 43 for 3 Tom feared for the worst and that 100 let alone the target of 200 would be elusive.
Sam Sweeting and Simsy had other ideas as the openers gave way to the change seamers, spinners and others came on. Ongar's promising youngsters looked solid and with Simsy unleashing his trademark legside drives Ongar, first stabilised, then consolidated and started to attack.
The partnership between Simsy, Sam and Mr Extras put on 70 crucial runs for Ongar before Sam was bowled. This brought Mr President DJ Powell to the crease.
Simsy & the batting coach bettered the previous partnership, putting on 113 together. If Chris & Sam had built the base of the innings, DJP and Simsy put the icing on the, er, innings cake. Simsy was brutal on the Epping skipper's bowling and that of the veteran Terry Moore. Chris hit some crackerjack shots, marmalising the opposition to all corners of the lane and including some huge sixes over mid on on his way to 123 not out, his third ton for the club.
Powelly was not to be outdone and even hit a six (yes really!) in his cameo innings of 35.
With Powelly departing in the closing overs Jamie Watson managed to avoid helping his mum and dad with teas by getting out to the middle to give Simsy some company as Ongar sought to light the candles on the innings cake.
Tea was tasty with mushroom topped pizza making a rare appearance in OSSC and flapjacks being the cake based product of the day.
Peter & Mario shared the new ball with Peterno doubt recalling some memorable performances against the 'ping in the past. Mario showed him the way though taking both openers after they had put on 29 together.
Sensing he was slipping behind the Italian South African in their personal batting, Peter produced a cutter that the Epping skipper tried to cut but missed and was bowled for none.
If Tom has learnt anything from Powelly coaching it is that you need a strong top hand when batting, spotting that the 'ping number three had a strong bottom hand Tom sensed catches maybe forthcoming and on ten the youngster spooned one to Tom runnning on from long off.
Eppings number five played well but Ongar were kicking themselves when he was put down at extra cover before going on to make 32 not out. Number 6 and former skipper Jim is a lovely guy but has a habit of getting out to Ellis and was found out again by the man from Speedy Hire.
The number seven Bidwalia was proving to be harder to remove and survived the combined attack of Mario, Peter and Jamie 'Broady' Watson so Ian Groves came in to the attack. Bidwalia is clearly a man who likes to attack and with Epping 80 - 6 and into the 10th over after 6 was attacking Ian over the infield.
Sensing another change in tactic Tom brought second spinner Mukesh on and in his first over he persuaded Bidwalia to spoon one to the normally very reliable Tall Paul at deep mid wicket, however having done the hard work Paul spilled it.
Another change was on the card and Powelly came on to induce another big Bidwalia shot which this time cannoned in to his stumps. Powelly bamboozled the incoming Moore but the ball which had careered into the Ongar stumps all too often earlier in the day just wouldn't hit the stumps and Ongar were left to settle for a draw.
