Old Brentwoods v Ongar Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 09 May 2009 at 1.00pm
Ongar Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets

Match report With the weather better than could be expected at the start of the season Ongar made the short trip down the Brentwood road for a local derby against Old Brentwoods.

With Old B's having being bowled out for 150 against league newboys Belhus the week before while Ongar were being trounced by 1st division South Woodford, it looked like Ongar would bowl first given half a chance. The toss however was lost and Ongar's openers Chairman Sukks and Treasurer Tom were soon striding out to the pristine Old B's wicket.

Ongar started watchfully and with no real alarms started to up the run rate with Tom first to hit a couple of 4's off one opener before stealing strike and taking two more in one over from the other. Sukks got in on the act too as Ongar took advantage of the nice wicket and some increasingly wayward bowling.

Having reached 73 the partnership was broken as Sukks edged behind for 22. Returning 2007 player of the year Sam Adcock was in next and again had to play himself in as the Old B's took heart from the dismissal and started to find their line. having looked in good touch Sam departed next as a full bloodied drive was held at the second attempt at mid off. Leading 2008 run scorer Chris Sims was next to arrive at the crease and after playing himself in took 16 off one over as Old B's mixed up the bowling in search of further break throughs.

Tom was the next to go after compiling a 73 which was at times attacking, defensive, orthodox and not so orthodox. With Tom gone we had the pleasure of seeing the rare but very welcome sight of Nick Suker striding to the crease.

With Sukelet providing stoic support Simsy cruised to his 50. Both batsmen were in full flow when Simsy was run out for 69 looking for a run that seemed rather ambitious.

Jack Groves joined Suklet as Nick neared his 50. Jack didn't hang around long though as after a couple of nice shots was run out. Nick was looking for the half centruty but it didn't happen though as lauching another big shot into the deep he was caught for 49. That was to be the end of the innings as Tom declared on 244 a couple of overs before the 52 over mark.

After a tasty tea, which as usual at Ashwells included various hot treats Peter and 'Super' Mario Picceri opened the bowling as Ongar sought victory and a memorable start to the season.

Ongar got a great start as Peter made a early breakthrough by bowling one of the openers. Sadly for Ongar this brought the stylish A Lall who looked a classy performer. Immediately he and skipper Johnson started to rebuild he innings but Ongar had a chance to nip the recovery in the bud as Lall was to slice one to slip when on just five. Unfortunately the chance went begging as the ball went in and out of Jack's hands..

It was a massively expensive drop as Lall started to motor and ably supported by Johnson the runs were flowing. Ongar took hope as Peter bowled Johnson and then change bowler Sammy Adcock got a lbw decision to dismiss the number four. At the other end Paul Gill came on and induced an inside edge from the number five batsmen. At this point Ongar sensed victory knowing that dismissing number three A Lall would be vital to their hopes.

Their hopes wre dashed by the arrival at the crease of Jazz Lall who played no less attackingly than his Dad and with all Ongars bowling options being unable to prise out the father and son duo the two took Old Brentwoods to the victory target at a rapid rate.
