Match report
Ongar welcomed local rivals Epping to The Lane for their last home fixture of the season. The wicket was slightly damp due to a heavy downpour on the previous evening, but Ongar skipper Rakesh was confident enough to win the toss and elect to bat.
After the success of last week, Ongar were again to open with Adcock and Adcock. However, against some useful new ball bowling on a wicket offering a little bit of assistance, Ongar were soon deep in trouble at 61-5. Ongar's top 4 all removed by The Ping's skipper Preston, with Madcock (8), Ben (4), Rakesh (1) all clean bowled and Sam Adders (30) who was looking good before being trapped LBW offering no shot. Blake (4) was also cleaned out by Ellis. So, not an unfamiliar problem for the Ongar lower middle order, but once again they had to dig in and hope to post a decent target. Simsy joined Jas at the crease and at the drinks interval, had rescued the situation upto a point with Ongar still in some considerable peril at 98-5. The next 4 overs, produced only 5 runs, before Simsy (14) was undone by spinner Bidiwala. Stick then joined Jas, but in the 40th over with the score on 134, Ongar were to lose two more wickets as first Stick(11) was caught at Mid On, and Joe (0) was caught bat, pad 2nd ball, both off the bowling of Bidiwala. How lucky Ongar were to have Veteran Steve Adders batting at no. 10 in their line up as he wasted no time in taking the attack to the bowlers including 1 big six on to the club house wall, before he was to mistime a pull and was caught at mid wicket for a more than run a ball 25. This had pushed the Ongar total up to 185, in the meantime Jas had almost gone unnoticed notching up a vital half century. Not much was expected of Ongar's 11th man Ver Burgess, but to the delight of the rest of his team
mates, he pulled Preston for a boundary over square leg before finally becoming Prestons 5th wicket for a valuable 7. So, Ongar were bowled out in the 50th over for a spirited 197, Ongar had fought back well, in so small part to Jas who could enjoy his tea, job done, having batted for 2 and a quarter hours for a match rescuing 77no.
After another fine tea by Couglan Catering, the game was delayed for a minute or two to let a grass snake, slither off the square! The Ping's openers wasted no time in racing to 43 from only 6 overs, Madcock in particular proving expensive. However, it was to be Madcock who made the breakthrough with his final ball of his 3rd over, bowling Ellis (24). The Ping were missing 7 regulars due to Ramadan, plus the suspended Geoff Maynard and it showed in their batting, as Blake bowling with real venom (snake joke, get it!)
splattered stumps everywhere in bowling Singh first ball, Khan (0) 2nd ball and Twitchett (1) 2nd ball, not to be out done, Madcock was also proving to be a pain in the asp, to the Epping batsmen, having Barratt (0) caught behind by his old man, 3rd ball. So, 4 wickets in 8 balls, reduced The Ping to 46-5, and Madcock then picked up the crucial wicket of Akbar (34) who was posing the only real threat. Skipper Preston, was joined at the crease by Sullivan (0), who was bowled 2nd ball by Blake, The Ping now 67-7. Bidiwala (14) enjoyed a brief moment of success, smashing Blake in to the car park before he was bowled by Sam Adcock, and Reddy, certainly needed to be! Battled well until he was caught at short cover by Joe for 14, to be come Blake's 5th wicket. The Ping had much earlier been reduced to 10 men, with the unfortunate stand in keeper, Ginn, fracturing his finger in 2 places off only the 5th ball of the day. Game over, with Epping being bowled out in only 26.2 overs for 124. Good work from all of the Ongar bowlers, Blake 13.2 ov. 5-52, Madcock 7 ov 3-49 and Sam Adders 6 ov 1-19. Twenty very welcome points for Ongar, who were the better team on the day and deserved their win. However, with both teams at one point 61-5, what a different story it might have been without the contribution of Ongar's Man of the Match Jas and his invaluable 77 no.
