Match report
Ongar made the trip to promotion chasing Stanford Le Hope, with a host of familiar faces missing. Rakesh won the toss (at last) and chose to bat on a hard green track.
SLH, medium pacers were to make little impact as Ongar’s opening pair of Ben and Sam looked quite at ease. Sam in particular hitting 4 boundary fours in the first 2 overs. After 12 overs, SLH introduced the ever dangerous left arm spin of Poulton and after a watch full start Ben (30) went back instead of forward and was bowled. With the score on 70 from 18 overs. Stick (19) joined Sam and they moved along to 116 before Stick tried a pull shot and was caught at backward square leg. Ongar were still more than usefully placed but unfortunately the skipper managed to drive straight over the top of one (not for the first time this season) and was bowled for 4. Sam Adders continued to march up the wicket and crash the ball through wide mid on and in the process secured his maiden 1st XI 50. Cruising on to 65 before taking the bait from Poulton and hitting in the ball straight down ‘cows’ throat, which was a shame. But still a lot better than the rest had managed. Blake moved up the order to 5, was the 3rd of Poulton’s wickets. LBW for (8) missing a full toss with his sweep shot and was absolutely plum. Unfortunately 1 brings 4 (and not 2) in Ongar’s case as Simmsy(0) was caught behind 2nd ball off Poulton. Joe (4) didn’t seem to have any answers either as his misjudged sweep was caught at backward squareleg . Matt Reynolds(25) was beginning to find his feet, and even scored a run on the leg side, much to the surprise of the watching Jamie 'silver fox' Abbott, who had had to take the day off to do the ironing or hoovering or basically whatever Vicky decided. I'm not sure she looks all that scary to me Jamie! Too Tall Paul didn’t hang around crashing the ball for 4 through cover point. Powelly (0) was bowled and so was Paul (12)to leave Mukesh on first team debut stranded on 1 no. Ongar bowled out for 189 in 51.3 overs which given that the outfield was like lightening and that they had been given a good platform by Steve and Ben was probably at least 50 runs under par. Full marks to Poulton who finished with figures of 7-40
After a magnificent tea (including hot dogs!) Ongar started well, with Sam, now opening the bowling as well as the batting. Sam bowled a good line and length and was able to offer Blake good support, deservedly trapping SLH opener Noble LBW for 16. But, Ongars next choice of bowler was always going to be a problem without Jamie, Madcock, and Dan Shutts. Too Tall Paul (2 ov 0-25,) Powelly (3 ov 0-19), Mukesh(3 ov 0-20) all took their turn but the end result was pretty much the same, as the impressive Gray and Knight made light work of Ongar’s under strength attack. Blake was having trouble extracting any kind of pace and movement from the wicket and tried his luck at the pavilion end but unfortunately with no better results. Rakesh replaced Blake from the Estuary end and was unlucky in seeing a couple of catches go down, but in truth, frustrating as it may have been, there was no stopping the SLH batsmen as the romped to an easy victory for the loss of only 1 week.
Ongar were well beaten on the day, and SLH continue to march onwards to the better things. However, given the team available to Ongar on the day, with the likes of Jamie, Jas, Kev, Nobbler, Dan,Madcock all unavailable, Ongar would have probably taken 6 points before the start of the game.
