Ongar Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Old Parkonians on Sat 08 Aug 2009 at 1.00pm
Ongar Cricket Club Won by 1 wicket
Match report
Clear blue sky and sunshine greeted the eleven Ongar players as they entered the gates of Love Lane for the return fixture against Old Parkonians. The previous encounter went right down to the wire with all twenty wickets falling for 207 runs and Ongar managing a tight 13 run victory.
Ongar were fielding their youngest side of the year with the experience of Nobbler, Stick, Jas and Steve Adcock all not being available this week. Rakesh went out to do the toss, which was won by Old Parks who decided to have a bat first.
Blake opened the bowling with the returning Matt Adcock and bowled pretty well early on a pitch that you just had to get forward on. After a few close shouts, some would call it third time lucky, Blake had Kahn lbw for 4 and then picked up one of the danger men in Solomonides for no score to a well judged catch from Nick (the chef) Suker who had managed to wrangle a second Saturday off in a row to play. Jamie Abbott replaced Matt at the Castle End and after 3 maidens held on to a difficult caught and bowled on his second grab at it. Old Parks, thanks mostly to their captain Paul Robbins, began to take the game away from Ongar as they moved to 3/89 after 30 overs. Blake wasn't looking like getting a wicket so Rakesh decided to roll the dice and began warming up to bring himself into the attack. This had automatic success as his 5th ball resulted in a catch to Matt Reynolds, who took a good low catch at mid on and in the process accidentally got his whites dirty. However, the telling point of the game was to come at the other end as Jamie caught the outside edge of Robbins' bat, which Kevin snapped up with gloves to reduce Old Parks to a precarious 5/92. Ongar could see the game was there for the taking and when Rakesh picked up another two wickets and Jamie his third the stage was set for Matt to come back into the attack and go Bang! Bang! to take the last two wickets in his first over. Ongar had fought back well and taken the last 7 wickets for just 31 runs to leave them chasing a very gettable 123. Blake with 2 wickets, Jamie 3, Rakesh 3 and Madcock 2 was an excellent all round performance as only two Old Parks batsmen made it into double figures.
After a lovely Mrs Adcock tea Ongar now had a job to do with the bat. Jamie and Ben got us into double figures before some loud shouting finally got the better of the umpire who gave Jamie out LBW for 5. One can only think decisions like these are heavily contributing to his rapidly increasing number of grey hairs! Jo 'Barney' Curtis walked out, and unaware that Robbins could swing the ball in, decided to leave a ball that did just that and he was on his way first ball to give Old Parks some hope. Ongar were unable to get that big steadying partnership as 3/41 became 4/61 and 5/74 with Ben (16) and Rakesh (24) back in the pavillion. Blake and new boy Matt Reynolds got the score up to 94 before Blake went for 18 and then Madcock for 3 reduced Ongar to 7/99. Paul and Matt went quickly after to leave Ongar teetering at 9/109 thinking that we couldn't possibly let another win slip away. Luckily for Ongar we finally showed that we do bat all the way down to 11 with Chef Suker and Kevin knuckling down and showing some fight. With 20 overs to go and 15 runs needed it was fair to say they could afford to wait for the bad balls. Nick and Kevin waited and put the bad ball away each over that came as we crept towards the total. Four runs to win and a change in bowling brought a seamer on, which only suited Ongar as Kevin punched a confident single through cover and then two balls later Nick gave one everything he had through cover as they turned to come back for the 3 and the win! Ongar players and supporters went crazy on the boundary with high fives all round! Ongar had finally won a close one with the bat with Nick and Kevin the heroes, both finishing on 7 not out. A very memorable match for Ongar and hopefully it can give us some confidence for the rest of the season.
