Match report
Ongar travelled to Benfleet, the run away leaders of Div. 3 and still unbeaten after two thirds of the season. Benfleet won the toss and unsurprisingly inserted their visitors.
Ongar made a good start with Sam Adders and Jamie making 34 before Sam was brilliantly stumped in the twelve over for 14. Jamie and Stick moved the score on to 54 from 17 overs before Stick (9) was caught behind/LBW or something! Rakesh (1) was cleaned bowled 2nd ball and suddenly the Ongar collapse looked on the cards. However, Blake had been promoted to 5 and with Jamie the pair looked in fine touch, taking the score along to 93 from 24 overs before Blake (22) was bowled around his legs by leg spinner Pritchard. Unfortunately Jamie (32) quickly followed mistiming a pull to mid wicket, having seen off the opening bowlers, he had looked well set. Joe and Jas began to rebuild and Ongar moved on to 122-5 from 34 overs. Still not a bad position, but the feeling was that the two guys (Jamie and Blake) who had both looked so good, were now both back with their arse's sat on plastic seats, instead of out there still batting. NOW, the Ongar collapsed arrived, later than normal perhaps, but still no less dramatic, 122-5, 123-6, 123-7, 123-8, 123-9, with leg spinner Pritchard causing the most damage, as too tall Paul was bowled first ball, followed by Nick Suker (0) caught bat/pad with the emphasis being on the word pad, followed by Kev (0) bowled 2nd ball. At the other end, Jas was thinking that he might get in the bar quicker than expected. Veteran Powelly(7) provided some much need support but was unfortunately LBW to Pritchard, leaving the impressive Jas (28 no). Ongar had been dismissed for a disappointing 139 in the 43rd over, when, not for the first time this season, a much better total and looked on the cards.
So, after tea, merely a formality for high scoring Benfleet to canter to the 140 required for victory. However, skipper Tremain was caught behind off Blake from the 3rd ball of the innings, quickly followed by Wright (10) who was comprehensively bowled by Blake. It was then Jamie's turn, as he trapped opener Jenkins (8) LBW. Benfleet were now 26-3 but with plenty of batting still to come. But thanks to some superb bowling from Jamie and Blake, Benfleet suffered their own collapse as 44-3 quickly became 47-6. Two more wickets later, they were 58-8 and there was surely to be only one winner. However surprising as it may seem, lowly Ongar were going to be the first team to beat Benfleet all season long. BUT, the much forecast rain had arrived and for once the forecast appeared to be deadly accurate. Fair play to the umpires who allowed play to continue as long as possible, but with the Benfleet guys carrying out the drinks with umbrella's up, just incase the umpires were unaware that it was raining, the umpires did the only thing that they could do given the circumstances and called a halt to proceedings with Benfleet on 63-8. In truth, the game was never going to restart and Benfleet were allowed to escape with their unbeaten record intact. As for Ongar, they can hold their heads up high, for on the day, they had clearly performed the better, but it just goes to show that there's not much luck to be had when you're near the bottom of the table and vice versa. Ongar's bowling heroes were Blake 15 overs 5-28 and Jamie, 14 overs 3-27, what a magnificent effort it was from them both. Surely, both deserved to finish on the winning side.
But, now only 1 defeat in the last 5 weeks for Ongar who will look to keep their mini revival going against Old Parks who they beat so memorably earlier on in the season.
