Old Brentwoods v Ongar Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 25 Jul 2009 at 1.00pm
Match was Drawn

Match report Ongar made the short trip to Old Brenwoods hoping to put the previous weeks disaster behind them. Old B's won the toss and elected to make first use of the facilities which were as usual immaculate.
Ongar got off to the best possible start with Nobby taking a fine catch to remove opener Khan(0) with the 5th ball of the innings. This was to be their only success for a while however as Khuwaja joined Solari at the crease. The 'highlight' of the next period of play was centered around Blake and Solari. Blake came thundering in and the unfortunate Solari was struck about mid ships and collapsed to the ground in obvious distress. He was comforted with a glass of water and after a slow walk to square leg and no doubt a quick count up of his equipment he was ready to continue. Shouts of same again Blakey echoed around the field as Blake came thundering in again. Phil 'The Power' Taylor apart no one could have been so accurate, as his second dart crashed into double top, or double bottom as it was in this case. Once again the unfortunate Solari was face down on the ground eating grass. If it was a boxing match he would have certainly failed the count, but give a man his due, he once again stumbled to his feet. It would have been fair enough if he had waved the white flag at this point and returned to the dressing room to lick his wounds, or certainly put some cold water on the them. They must have been the size of water melons by now! Eventually the laughter subsided and it was time to face up Blake again. He once again got perfectly in line and disappointingly decided it was less painful to use his bat on this occasion. In the meantime the score was racing along. With Old B's on 86 runs from 14 overs before Solari eventually surrendered hitting the ball straight up in the air of Blake and Sam Adcock took the catch calmly in the covers. Jamie in the meantime was struggling with his run up and was replaced by the Skipper, unfortunately this did nothing to slow the flow of runs from Khwaja who had now been joined by Khalid. Although Rakesh was desperately unlucky with the missed stumping off the last ball before drinks. Next to be given a try was Tom Hartington but once again this made little impression on the Old B's run rate. Khalid (40) played on to Blake with the score on 163 from 29 overs. Sam Adcock had finally proved the answer at the rugby pitch end claiming Ahsan(13) caught by Blake at cover. Then followed 2 overs later by Khwaja(102) who after surviving one very strong shout for caught behind of Blake early on had proceeded to three figures, by predominately trying to make every ball he faced a half volley and then smashing it back over the bowlers head and on a track as good as Old B's even if you've only got 1 shot, if you're good enough at it, that alone will be sufficient. Great catch by Rakesh on the deep long on boundary, just to prove that his one shot did eventually get him out. Former Ongar old boy Pinal Patel was then caught by Rakesh for 21 having survived a number of scary moments and Sam picked up a third deserved wicket, as the Old B's innings began to fade away. The Old Boys finally calling at a day on 254-7 from 46 overs. If only Khwaja had been given out caught behind things may have been different as early wickets would have certainly made a big difference. Once the top 4 had been removed there really wasn't much left in reserve, but unfortunately it was not to be. Once again a magnificent effort by Blake who bowled unchanged from the pavilion end for 23 overs, picking up 4-92. A really good spell by Sam Adders who supported him well with 3-35 from his 7 overs.
Although Ongar had been set a big target, any team batting first on such a good track would have fancied posting 200+ so it was hardly unexpected although one or two of the Ongar players struggled to hide their disappointment during the interval.

After tea, Jamie was reinstated as opener along with Tom, unfortunately Tom was adjudged caught behind for a 5th ball duck. Stick joined Jamie and the pair batted well together until Stick(41) was caught and bowled by Khalid with the score on 82 in the 28th over. Ongar then suffered their obligatory collapse with Rakesh(2) Sam(0) and Paul(6) all falling in quick succession. Thankfully
Blake was able to prevent the situation becoming critical, before he was caught for 39. Ongar then had a tricky 3 over spell to negotiate in which veteran Adders(0) was dismissed, but Ongar were able to cling on for a draw with Jas(3 no) and Dan Shutts (0 no). So, at last some positives to be taken, with now only 1 defeat from the last month. Also the return to form of Jamie (51) with the bat and Sam Adders looking good with the ball. However, tougher challenges lay ahead with the trip to run away league leaders Benfleet next on the agenda.
