Ongar Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Woodford Green on Sat 18 Jul 2009 at 1.00pm
Ongar Cricket Club Lost by 4 runs

Match report Ongar entertained Woodford Green in a match which could ultimately decide who finishes second bottom of the table, with SOS so far adrift in last but only 4 points ahead of The Green.

On a slightly damp track, Woodford won the toss and elected to bat first.
Majeed blocked away for 8 long overs before finally being put out of his misery by Jamie, trapped absolutely plum in front for 4. Sayeed was looking much more comfortable at the other end until he was nicely caught at slip by Jas for 27. The Green had made a good start with 51-1 from 19 overs, with Blake only conceding one scoring shot from his opening 6 overs. But the game was suddenly to follow a similar pattern to that of the previous week with The Green collapsing in not quite so dramatic style, but even so still finding themselves on 68-6, with young Tom Hartington taking a good catch at Mid On of Blake, then following up with his first, first XI wicket, clean bowling Iqbal (9), In between Dan Shutts with a little help from Stick had produced a real sucker punch with his first ball long hop being smashed straight down Blake's throat at deep cow corner. Don't you just love it when a plan comes together? However, once again Green's skipper Masters was to prove difficult to dislodge, surely he bats far too low down the order, looking easily their best bat, making 41 from only 48 balls before being last out with The Green on 153. Yet again too much of the Ongar bowling was to fall on to Jamies and Blakes shoulders with only 8 overs being bowled by anyone else. Blake was superb with 23 overs 11 maidens, 5-42 and ably supported by Jamie who finished with 3-58 from his 14.5 overs. There was also a wicket a piece for Dan and Tom from their 4 overs a piece. An unusual number of extra's conceded by Ongar, with the innings second top scorer of 29 a handy contribution.

After tea, Ongar's assault on what was only at best a modest target never got out of 1st gear. Jas(0) was clean bowled 4th ball and could have finished his plate of sandwiches after all! Kevin joined Sam Adders at the crease but Ongar's run rate barely crept above 2 runs per over as first Kev (17) and then Sam (13), plus Jamie (5) were all out in quick succession. Ongar now needed
97 runs from the final 20 overs, when they had only needed 154 from 45 overs! Finally the innings was to be provided with much need impetus from Dan Shutts (20) and then Blake who smashed 50 from only 29 balls, supported by Rakesh(19). Unfortunately Rakesh was run out with 24 runs still required but still 6 overs remaining. Ongar then hit 13 runs from the next 2 overs before Blake was undone by a quicker one for 51. Surely Ongar couldn't fail, with only 11 runs to win and 4 wickets still in hand. Tom was bowled 1st ball, bring Stick to the crease to join too tall Paul. With 2 overs to go Ongar still needed 9 to win. Stick was then run out in the penultimate over attempting a quick single to mid on, but unfortunately the throw was straight and true. So, Ongar were left
with 5 to win from the last over and no wickets in hand. How Ongar had left it down to their no. 11 was in itself quite an amazing achievement, but unfortunately Nobblers wicket was to come crashing down on the 3rd ball of the over, with Paul stranded 4 no at the none strikers end. Cue, huge celebrations from The Green and quite rightly so. Ongar had well and truly choked and once
again snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, a result which allows The Green to easily leapfrog Ongar. Although probably a bowler or two light Ongar are certainly doing their bit in this dept. but you can't win matches if you dont score more runs than the opposition! Yet again, Blake must be wondering what more he has to do to finish up on the winning side!
