Ongar Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Southend On Sea on Sat 11 Jul 2009 at 1.00pm
Ongar Cricket Club Won by 5 wickets
Match report
Ongar welcomed Southend On Sea to The Lane, and it was SOS who chose to bat first on yet another Steve Adcock belter.
It was a curious start to the game with Madcock's radar out of kilter at one end and Blake straight on the money from the other. So runs flowed and then stopped and then flowed and then stopped (you get the picture) until Madcock was replaced after just 2 overs by Jamie. And then the runs stopped and the wickets started, with Blake bowling Solanki (8). Jas picked up a nice catch at
slip to remove no. 3 for (0), off Jamie but SOS were otherwise untroubled thanks to the quick start they had made they had runs in the bank so to speak and found themselves quite nicely placed at 58-2 from 19 overs. But no one could have quite predicted what would happen next as SOS produced an Ongaresque collapse, being reduced to 74-9 thanks to some awesome bowling from Jamie and a bit of help from Blake. Blake then quite inexplicably put down the no. 11 first ball by dropping an absolute dolly at mid wicket, some might say to ensure that Jamie didn't get another wicket nearer to catching him up! But, Ongar were made to pay, as the last pair batted sensibly, reaching 103 before Blakes plan worked and he collected the final wicket for himself. Jamies figures 13 overs 4 maidens 6-40 and Blake 17.3 overs 7 maidens 4-34. Absolutely fantastic bowling on a real belter of a pitch.
So it was in the bag, surely Ongar would get 104 against a severely under strength SOS. And for once it's nice to be able to say that they did. Ben(29) and Sam Adders(39) batted superbly, putting on 72 for the first wicket from only 12 overs. However there was still time for a little Ongar wobble as Ongar had their own mini collapse, losing 3 wickets for 3 runs before too tall Paul calmed everyones nerves with a smack over mid wicket and that was that.
All over and in the bar by 5.09pm. Not that uncommon a feat in Ongar games it has to be said, but not a bad thing on this occassion.
