Ongar Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Stanford Le Hope on Sat 27 Jun 2009 at 1.00pm
Ongar Cricket Club Lost by 7 wickets
Match report
June had started so promisingly for The Gar with the nail biting win away at Old Parks, but that now seemed but a dim and distant memory as Ongar's grim run of form continued at home to promotion chasing Standford Le Hope.
Rakesh lost the toss and Ongar were invited to bat first and were immediately in trouble with Jas being caught at first slip, second ball of the day. Once again the Ongar batters were to give their wickets away, with not one being out to anything other than a batting error. At least there were a few more in double figures this week, Ben(22), Rakesh(11), Jamie(14), Dan(18). But as usual
Ongar found that at 50-5 it was always going to be nothing more than damage limitation. Blake (41 no) from 37 overs was the only one that showed he had enough patience not to be rushed into an injudicious shot. At one point playing out 6 maidens out of 7 overs from the dangerous Poulton. It even appeared that however unlikely, Rakesh was going to have to make a decision on whether
to declare or bat on passed the 52 over mark, but 3 quick wickets soon put paid to that, as Ongar were not quite sure whether to 'stick or bust' being bowled out in the 52nd over for only 143 runs.
After tea and with the thunder clouds gathering, Standford quickly raced to 43-0 from their first 10 overs and dispite the imminent threat of a lightning strike, opener Gray would not be rushed into trying to get the job done to early, quite content as he was to play a watching brief against Blake, as runs flowed more freely from the other end. And so it was, thanks largely to the impressive Gray (81no) that Standford were to make it to their victory target from 31 overs for the loss of only 3 wickets. All of Ongar's wickets
on the day coming courtesy of Blake, who must be wondering given his own high standard of performance each week, why he keeps ending up on the losing side!
Ongar must now put June behind them and refocus on trying to ensure that with the half way point approaching this coming week end, they don't find themselves too far behind the rest of the pack.
