Epping v Ongar Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 13 Jun 2009 at 1.00pm
Ongar Cricket Club Lost by 79 runs

Match report On a warm and sticky afternoon Ongar made the short trip to the home of local rivals Epping. Ongar skipper Rakesh won the toss and inserted the hosts on a wicket that in all honesty didn't look the best.

The Ping were soon in trouble at 15-2 with Blake and Jamie both making an early breakthrough. It looked as though Ongar's bowlers were going to bowl out Epping in double quick time. However that was to prove about as good as it got for Ongar, as they quickly realised that the pitch was going to play a hell of a lot
better than it looked. Remaining opener Yousaf (23) was caught by Madcock at square leg off Blake with the score on 56, but the runs were flowing freely in between the wickets, with Ellis in particular enjoying fine placement and regularly managing to place the ball in to the gaps! Ably supported by Sly. Ellis (64) quickly raced to 50 with 11 fours until he was finally bowled by Madcock. Sly (63) was eventually caught by Kev at long on, off Blake. Hasan (26) and Kayani (38) were both caught behind by Nobbler off the bowling of Jamie and Blake, but by this time The Ping had already amassed 245-7. However, not for the first time this season Blake quickly cleaned up the tail. The Ping being bowled out for a formidable 250 from 48 overs. There were mixed emotions for Ongar's bowlers, the stand out performer being Blake 17 overs, 7-66. He was afforded good support from Jamie 2-47 from his 10 overs, but I'm afraid it was a rather undisciplined performance from the rest, Madcock 7 ov. 1-35, Rakesh 7 ov. 0-42, Dan Shutts 5 ov. 0-44 and Ben 2 ov. 0-16 will all have gone home and reflected that they should have done better.

After tea, Ongar started off in positive manner, with the new opening partnership of Jas and Joe putting on 39 runs in 7 overs before Joe was caught behind for 17. Jas showed rarely seen aggression as he cracked 7 fours until he was also caught behind for 32. Much like the bowling performance Ongar had peaked early and the innings began to fall away from this point. With Ben (17)
and Blake (22) the only other batsmen to make it to double figures. Ongar entered the last 20 overs requiring nearly 180 to win with 5 wickets remaining. If you were paying attention you may have noticed that I had failed to mention Jamie, who had been moved down to no. 5, in the hope that he would give the middle order some extra class, and there certainly can't be any blame apportioned to Jamie as he looked in no trouble whatsoever. But, Ongar were leaking wickets at the other end. It looked as though Ongar might hang on for a vital draw but with 3.1 overs to go Ongars resistance was finally extinguished as Stick and Nobbler were dismissed in consecutive deliveries, stranding Jamie on 49, with Ongar bowled out for 171.

It's probably fair to say that the team that performed the best on the day won through in the end and Ongar will certainly feel that, Blake apart, they can bowl and field much better. As for the batting, well I'm sure there would have been many occasions in the past when Ongar would have found themselves bowled out for under 100 in similar circumstances so at least there is signs of improvement in this department. Ongar will hope to show bouncebackability next week against West Essex, although they will certainly have to improve their performance on todays showing.
