Old Parkonians v Ongar Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 06 Jun 2009 at 1.00pm
Ongar Cricket Club Won by 13 runs
Match report
Ongar lost the toss and were made to bat first on an Old Parks pitch, preparation of which was obviously effected by the rain that fell on Friday and early Saturday morning.
It was not a good toss to lose by any stretch of the imagination, but Ongar had to get on with the task in hand and Jas and Jamie both battled hard against the new ball which was doing 'all sorts'. Jas(6) was the first to fall with the score on 13 in the 15th over. Quickly followed by Jamie(9) and Ben(0) leaving Ongar 19-3 from 19 overs. Opening bowler Robbins made full use of the conditions with incredibly his first 7 overs all being maidens! Rakesh(37) and Kevin(19) provided the partnership now desperately required, putting on 57 for the 4th wicket. Batting conditions were still incredibly difficult however and tough as the lower order battled onlyJoe(13) was able to get into double figures as Ongar found themselves bowled out for 110 from 49 overs. Once again it would appear that Ongars batting line up which stretches from 1 to 11 had failed to deliver, but at tea Ongar were not to dispondent given the bowling attack at their disposal
After tea Madcock struck early removing opener Rai(0), but after 2 maidens Blake decided he would like to switch ends, so Jamie had an over in order to facilitate the switch over. Former Old Parks first XI Skipper Jamie really appeared to have the bit between his teeth and after his maiden over the skipper decided to leave him on. A good decision it was too as his 2nd over was to provide a wicket. Jamie couldn't get into the game enough as he clung on to a fine catch diving forward from square leg off Blake. Old Parks quickly found themselves 19-3, however they moved on to 40-3 as Ongar condeded 19 runs in 2 overs. Jamie quickly came firing back at them with back to back wicket maidens including the wicket of opener Solomonides(31). His and the teams most pleasureable moment of the afternoon was also soon to follow with the wicket of Raval(0)! Ongar allowed themselves a brief moment of celebration before refocusing on trying to remove the final 4 wickets in hand, with Old Parks still requiring 61 for victory. As he was with the ball, Old Parks skipper Robbins was proving to be a quality performer but Ongar were still able to take wickets at the other end as Jamie continued on his one man crusade. Old Parks were now 63-8 but at long last the wicket had begun to flatten out as it dried and the ball now some 26 overs old was misbehaving with much less regulatory. Jamie claimed his 6th wicket with Kev taking the 2nd of two fine catches at mid on and Old Parks now required 25 runs for victory with the last pair at the crease, one of which however was skipper Robbins who still looked more than capable of winning the game on his own if he had to. Jamie had bowled himself to a standstill after 15 superb overs finishing with figures of 6-50 and Madcock was reintroduced still fresh after his short 2 over spell at the beginning of the innings. Only he knew what he was going to bowl, well we would all like to think he had a plan as he fired in a bouncer at Robbins first ball which he tried to hook only to edge through to keeper Nobbler. Cue wild celebrations as Nobbler took off like Linford Christie (Ems wished!) closely followed by the whole of the Ongar team, but a couple of stone lighter these days, he showed a turn of pace that any 37 year old would have been proud of as he lead his team a merry dance across the outfield. I'm sure that for all of those who took part, a moment of pure joy that will always be remembered over a pint or two on a cold winters night. Ongar's bowling had seen them through again with Blake, 17 overs 2-33 and Matt 2.1 overs 2-10 both providing good support to Ongar's man of the match, Jamie'Zammo''Jabba''Russ'Abbott. The bowling was also backed up by some superb fielding again, with Ongar clinging on to their catches like their lives depended on it and its probably fair to say that in this particular game they may wll have done, with no one wanting to let their team mates down. If Ongar can keep this level of performace up for the remainder of the season, surely mid table respectability is a real possibility.
