Ongar Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Benfleet on Sat 30 May 2009 at 1.00pm
Ongar Cricket Club Lost by 53 runs

Match report Ongar's only home game in a five week period was against table topping and unbeaten Benfleet. On probably the best looking wicket Love Lane had ever seen. It was so white, I'm sure Steve must have painted it on. It certainly couldn't be accused of being Magnolia that's for sure!

Benfleet won the toss and elected to make first use of it. Blake and Madcock really are quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with as once again Madcock was able to take 2 quick wickets in his first spell of 7 overs. Blake couldn't quite get things quite right, although he had only conceded 18 runs from his first 8 overs, decided he would like to have a go from the castle end. Jamie on replacing Blake at the pavilion end did an absolute superb job once again picking up 4 wickets, including a couple of LBW's and a catch for Simsy and one for Nobbler, making a very welcome first start for the 1's this season, having suffered an injury set back early doors. Benfleet on 174-7 looked likely with 7 overs remaining to score in excess of 200, but Blake and Madcock returned to clean bowl numbers nine, ten, and jack as the Benfleet innings came to a sudden end on 175 ao. Ongar's ground fielding and catching had been superb, and they are certainly showing improvements in this area of their game. Almost certainly down to the pre match warm up initiated by Blake. Well certainly 8 of the team are enjoying the activity with Stick, Simsy and Jas looking worn out before the game has even started!

So, for the second home game on the trot, Ongar only needed to chase down a modest total, but with the outcome of the Old Brentwoods game still fresh in their minds they begun badly, when a positive start was essential. Jamie, looking a bit tired after his bowling exertions managed to jab his bat down on to a good yorker in the first over, only for the ball to trickle back agonisingly and slowly remove the off bail. So 5-1, was quickly 14-2 and then 29-3 and 40-5 with Ben (5) Rakesh (7), Simsy (2), Jas (17) all failingwith the bat. Sam Adders (29)having been promoted up to 6, looked in good touch once again and with Blake managed to take the score along to 79, but with over 100 needed from the last 20 overs, Sam was caught out trying to up the run rate. Madcock (0) only lasted a couple of balls, quickly followed by Stick (0) and Dan Shutts (0). It was left to Nobbler and Blake to try and bat out the remaining 13 or so overs, but unfortunately Nobbler was stumped for 4, leaving a very dejected Blake stranded on 47 no. Ongar being bowled out for only 122 on a good pitch too. And so once again much debate was to be had as to how a team which supposedly bats all the way to 11 couldn't score 176 runs to win the game.

With 4 games only played, Ongar already know the painful truth that they had already chucked 2 games away. Games that they had worked hard in to get themselves into pole position only to let it all slip away! A habit that they must overcome sooner rather than later....
