Southend On Sea v Ongar Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 23 May 2009 at 1.00pm
Match was Drawn

Match report Ongar packed up their buckets and spades for an early season trip to Southchurch Park, the home of recently relegated Southend On Sea. And what was a very pleasant summers day, it was unfortunate to find that the changing facilities consisted of a metal container, with no showers or toilets. Thankfully Old Southendians are on hand to help out in what are obviously difficult times off the pitch at SOS. We wish SOS every success in resolving their problems asap.

On the pitch Ongar's skipper won the toss and elected to bat. Ongars opening pair of Jamie(15) and Jas (22) did a good job in seeing off the new ball, until SOS were to make their breakthrough in the 14th over with the score on 26, Jamie somehow managed to find himself caught behind from a ball that he was leaving! Rakesh batting at 3 looked in superb form, breezing to an elegant 43 from only 46 balls before holing out at Long Off with the score on 97 from 30 overs. Ongar looked to have the platform to push on, but an all to familiar pattern began to emerge as Simsy (7), Joe (1) and Dan Shutts (5) all came and went leaving Ongar suddenly in trouble at 112-6. Stick (14) was able to hang around with Blake as Ongar were at last able to establish a partnership. After which Madcock (0) was bowled slogging 2nd ball. Sam Adders (13) looked in good touch, especially for a no. 10, before being stumped, which brought Kev to the crease with still 3 overs to go and Ongar on only 176. Would they reach maximum batting points? Of course they would thanks to Aussie all rounder Blake, with 8 required off the final over to pass the 200 mark, he promptly smashed the first 3 balls of the last over for 6, they were so big they should have counted for 12. A fourth followed as he cracked 26 runs from the final over. It has to be said that magnificent as it was (and it was!) it couldn't have been achieved without the assistance from Kev (13 no) who gave Ongar the chance to see out the final over. At last some benefit achieved from having a batting line up without a tail. As Ongars innings closed on 218. Note to Maguire - it must be the sea air that makes you Aussie's feel so at home at SOS, or is it the beach that reminds you of home!

After tea Ongar's new ball attack of Blake and Madcock bowled superbly, with Madcock picking up 2-23 from his first limited spell of 7 overs. Why at 18 he is still restricted to 7 over spells is really beyond me! Ongars third seamer Jamie quickly chipped in taking 2-24 from his first 7 overs. SOS were rocking at 87-7 and surely all the hard work was done. Rakesh had taken his obligatory catch at mid off and even Simsy had clung on to 1 out off 3 at mid on. But Ongar hadn't bargained on the SOS no. 6 J. Daly who after a watchful start batted superbly, passing his 50 after 65 balls and his 100 off only 90 balls. An incredible one man show and a thoroughly well deserved ton. Ongar were by now looking ragged and devoid of ideas, but with 28 to win from the remaning 4 overs tragedy struck on the pitch next door, and it quickly became apparent that a simple game of cricket was of no importance whatsoever, as the match was abandoned as a draw.

Ongar Cricket Club would like to add our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Andrew Sasiadek and to all at Old Southendians C.C. who sadly lost one of their own this afternoon.
