Woodford Green v Ongar Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 16 May 2009 at 1.00pm
Ongar Cricket Club Won By 9 wickets

Match report Ongar made the short trip to Woodford Green fully aware of the areas needed to be improved after the disappointing loss to Old Brentwoods in their opening fixture.

Ongar skipper Bagga lost the toss and rather suprisingly given the damp wicket and overcast conditions The Green elected to bat first. They must have seen Ongars fielding drills and warm up and figured that they had nothing much to worry about!

Right from ball 1 the Woodford openers made their intentions clear, walking up the wicket to Blake and attempting to smash every ball out of the ground. So, with the ball flying to all parts off all parts of the bat, Green quickly galloped to 20-0 from the opening 2 overs. However, Ongar felt confident that if the batsmen continued to take such risks it would only be a matter of time before they made a breakthrough, and so it proved as Aslim(16) gloved a bouncer from Madcock through to keeper Pike. Sayed(2) quickly followed in Blakes next over, caught acrobatically by Jamie at 2nd slip, just as Jas was going to gobble it up at 1st slip. Wickets feel at extremely regular intervals with further success for both Blake and Madcock, with only Davies(35) showing any signs of wanting to hang around. But he was to fall in the first over after drinks to yet another catch behind the wicket. The first 7 dismissals all coming by way of a catch behind, with new keeper Pike claiming 4, Jas snapped up 2 at first slip, including a joint effort with Jamie who dived high (well comparatively high anyway) and parried the ball into the air, Jas clinging on to the rebound with the pair ending up in a heap on the floor, luckily Jamie was left non the worse for the ordeal! Masters(19) and Hawkes(17) batted very sensibly and Ongar were left to wonder why on Earth they were batting so low down the order, until The Golden Arm of Dan Shutts did it again, with a partnership breaking long hop which was smashed to Bagga at mid off who did what he now appears to do every week and cling on to a tough catch. All of Ongars bowlers chipped in with Blake once again being the pick with figures of 15 0v. 4-38. Really well supported by the improving Madcock 7.3 ov. 4-40. It was good to see Jamie back bowling again after injury, 8 ov. 1-18 and of course Dan Shutts 1-6 from his vital over.

Ongar requiring 121 to win began their innings at 3.33pm knowing that any sort of sensible batting display would see them over the line. Jas and Jamie got off to a solid start before Jas uncharactaristicly played an attacking shot and was caught at mid off for 7 (apparently he had spotted that the bar was open). Jamie was joined at the crease by Ben who once again showed what a quality performer he is with a well constructed 41 not out. At the other end, Jamie would admit that his innings wasn't his best ever, but fortunately The Green were unable to cling on to any of the chances presented to them, and in the end Jamie picked up a well deserved half century, finishing on 56 not out. An Ongar win by 9 wickets by 5.30pm a pretty rare occurrence indeed, but Ongar were well deserving of their success and then 18 points to nil victory. However I am sure that there will be stiffer tests to face in the weeks to come.
