Ongar Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v South Woodford R2 on Sat 02 May 2009 at 1.00pm
Ongar Cricket Club Lost by 9 wickets

Match report For the first time in their history, Ongar found themselves in the 2nd round of the League Cup facing the daunting prospect of facing Premier div. South Woodford, Carl Greenidge and all!

On what was arguably the best looking track ever seen at The Lane for the first fixture of the season, Ongars new and undefeated skipper Rakesh Bagga won the toss for the 2nd time in a row and elected to bat first.

Ongars opening pair of Jamie and Jas got off to a good start with 32 on the board off 10 overs before Jamie(14) tried to loft one over mid-off and was caught by Neicho. No luck for the aforementioned Greenidge whose spell of 5 overs 0-14 included two consecutive wides for bouncers that went too high over the batsmans head! Yes on Ongars track! Its fair to say that he was bowling at a more than lively pace! Next to go was Rakesh(7) who with the score on 64 was bowled by the off spin of Correya. After that the wheels pretty much came off in fairly spectacular style as the Ongar batsmen pretty much threw their wickets away against the twin spin attack of South Woodford. A collapse of spectacular style seeing Ongar go from their great start of 64-1 from 18 overs to 93 all out. The last 9 wickets falling for only 29 runs with only Stick(19 no) offering any real resistance. Although once again Jas(19) had done a really solid job at the top of the order.

After tea, South Woodford's opening pair found themselves having little trouble in knocking off the runs required at a more than steady pace. Blake did finally make a breakthrough, having South's skipper Akram caught by Rakesh at mid off for 45. A good catch by Rakesh as the ball was really motoring. South's romping home by 9 wickets after only 17.4 overs, with only Blake showing that he could handle the step up in class. Bowling his 9 overs for only 20.

Ongar were well beaten on the day, not unexpectedly it has to be said, but they can be proud in taking the game to superior opposition in the first hour. After that,Ongar's batsmen have plenty to reflect on prior to their second encounter with Old Brentwoods next week, when they open their league campaign.
