Old Brentwoods R1 v Ongar Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 25 Apr 2009 at 1.00pm
Ongar Cricket Club Won by seven wickets
Match report
New Ongar skipper Rakesh Bagga marshalled his new look troops for the first time, as Ongar made the short trip to local div. 3 rivals Old Brentwoods for the
League Cup 1st round. On a very pleasant April day, Bagga won the toss and elected to field.
Ongars new ball attack of Madcock and Blake were quick to make a breakthrough with the skipper taking a fine catch at mid off, off Madcock, this was followed up with Blake bowling Khalid (1). Old Brentwoods were soon 39-4 from 12 overs after another wicket for Madcock before Jamie came on from the Pavilion end and Stick rolled back the years to take a glorious one handed catch at point.
Left handed as well! However, the arrival of Choudhury was to herald Old B's best moment of the match as he smashed the Ongar attack to all parts for a quick
fire 45 from only 26 balls faced before debutant Ben Chambers deceived him with a flighted slower ball. But netherless it was very fine partnership of 72 runs with good support from Johnson (21). Old B's collapsed for a 2nd time from 111-4 to 122-8 thanks to some fine bowling from all of the Ongar bowlers. But some late risistence from the tail finally saw Old B's all out for 171 with 11 overs of their 45 still available. Ongars bowling figures, Blake 2-25, Madcock 2-23, Jamie 1-36, Ben Chambers 1-42, Dan Shutts 2-17, Rakesh 2-25. How pleasing it was to see all of Ongars bowlers in such fine form early doors, and also nice to see them well supported in the field, with some fine catches held.
After tea, Ongars other debutant Jaz Chogger accompanied Jamie to the crease, and Jamie promptly smashed Raza out of the ground for 6 in the first over.
But Raza was quick to gain his revenge when Jamie(14) chipped the ball tamely back to him for an easy caught and bowled. Rakesh(0) was soon to follow bowled
by Mughal. So Ongar had a lot of work to do at 18-2 but Jaz looking solid, in more ways than one, was not to be rushed and did a great job in seeing off the new ball threat of Mughal, who finished with amazing figures of 9 overs, 7 maidens, 1-3. But thanks to Jaz, Ongar had vital wickets in hand. At the other end Ben was batting beautifully, cruising to an extremely impressive 74 from 101 balls before finally being bowled by Khalid. But the hard work had been done thanks to their match winning partnership of 124. So, with Ongar needing 25 from the finally 5 overs, Ongar had the luxury of sending in Madcock with 7 wickets in hand who duely ensured that there was to be no nervous finish as he smashed 24 from 16 balls, including a 6 to win the game.
Ongar had finally done it, after many years of trying they had at last won a 1st round league cup game. Albeit it is the first time drawn against fellow div 3 opponents. Ongar were infact the only div 3 side that made it in to week two of the competition, but face the daunting task of hosting Premier div side
South Woodford in round 2. However for the moment Ongar could quite happily reflect on a great start to the new season, and look forward to the league season with much optimism after this performace against one of the sides much fancied for promotion.
