Ongar Cricket Club Sunday XI v Abridge on Sun 03 Aug 2008 at 2.00
Match was Abandoned due to rain

Match report Doesn’t time fly when you're having fun and so it seems as all too quickly it was time for the eagerly awaited second clash between Ongar and Abridge. With The Bridge very much aware that they must improve on things second time around if they were to reverse the outcome of the first meeting earlier in the season, when they were rather too easily dispatched by 9 wickets.

On a very dark and wet Sunday afternoon, proceedings were delayed until 3.10pm when finally the rain abated and conditions, albeit rather soggy were deemed playable.

Ongar skipper Blake showed the confidence he had in his side by winning the toss and electing to bat, despite the bowler friendly conditions. And with the game reduced to 35 overs, Ongar’s number 1 chemist, Rakesh, looked in the mood straight away, wasting no time in cracking 3 boundary fours in Hirons first over. Ably assisted by opening partner Tom, the pair pretty much scored runs at will, with only Powelly looking to be asking any sort of questions. Rakesh was first to his 50 and a classy knock it was to, until looking to accelerate he was caught by Village skipper Elliott off the bowling of Sam Cross for a good to watch 60, with the score on 106. Simmsy having endured a rather longer wait than normal before arriving at the crease was keen to keep the momentum going, but was to take one risk too many and was stumped by Ashton off the bowling of Greg Cross for 11. Pinal (18) duly smashed his first ball for 4 and looked in good touch until Blake arrived on the scene and promptly decided to run him out, after a good piece of work by Phair who quickly gathered the ball and rifled it in over the top, one bounce from 5 yards. In the meantime Tom had quietly gone about his job and cemented the innings together until he was to fall caught and bowled by all rounder Spud for a mighty fine 61. Sam Sweeting offered Blake good support as the pair produced a partnership of 54 until Sam (8) was bowled by Gill. The under strength Bridge attack was now under real pressure and Blake decided to put them to the sword, smashing Spud Taylor for 20 in a single over, producing a bowling change by the Bridge skipper Nick Elliott who decided to bring himself on for the final over. 3 sixes and 27 runs later, might make him think again in future. So the Ongar innings closed after 35 overs for a mammoth 245-6, with Blake 55 not out. The pick of The Bridge bowlers, the one and only Powelly, who bowled his 7 overs straight off for a very economical 22 runs.

After a very fine Suker tea, the Bridge began to make heavy weather of their reply, with Ongar's young opening bowlers, Jamie Watson and even younger Jake Oliver quickly reducing the visitors to 37-4. However by this time the rain had returned and it was eventually decided, quite rightly, that it was too heavy to continue. The game finally being abandoned with the Bridge staring down the barrel at 53-5.

All credit to both sides who did everything possible to get as much of a game in as possible, before the elements finally won the day, and another good performance by Ongar who once again certainly proved to have very much the upper hand on their Village neighbours.

Let’s hope The Bridge can bounce back again next season!
