Abridge v Ongar Cricket Club Sunday XI on Sun 15 Jun 2008 at 2.00
Ongar Cricket Club Won by 9 wickets
Match report
Ongar made the short trip to local rivals Abridge for this much-anticipated first of two encounters this season. Well, much anticipated by Abridge, unfortunately it seems not so by Ongar, with the game disappointingly supported by their members, Ongar arrived with only 7 players. Stick was borrowed from the villagers, along with Paul Taylor (Spud Taylor’s brother) a non-cricketer, and Derek a friend of the Villagers skipper, Nick, who hadn’t played a game for 16 years.
With former Village skipper Stick in charge for the day, Ongar won the toss and asked Abridge to bat and what a start with The Blakester clean bowling The Bridge's talismatic opener Padfield with the very first ball of the game. Job done, Blake was removed from the attack with Ongar short on bowling, Stick decided to keep his strike bowler up his sleeve and bring himself on. At the other end, Stick used his insider knowledge of The Bridge's batsman by opening up with young off spinner Billy Ayres. This turned out to be an inspired move with Billy quickly removing opener Phair (1) and the big hitting Wood first ball.
So Abridge skipper Nick strode to the crease with his team in disarray and Ayres on a hat trick. A tentative push forward by Nick saw the ball loop gently to Shrek at first slip, who quite unbelievable dropped it, he can only have been having a doze behind his shades! If it had been a bottle of Magners he would have snaffled it up no problem. But Billy showing great maturity for his age, put it behind him and bowled superbly finishing with figures of 9ov 4-34. Bridge skipper Elliott made the most of his good fortune top scoring with 36 and shared a useful partnership with Ashton (31). Greg Cross (25) the only other score of note.
Ongar’s other wicket takers were Stick 6 ov 1-19, Blake 7 ov 1-13, Matt Adcock 5 ov 1-19 and young Jake Oliver who bowled really well, 8 ov 1-43. George Padfield (12 year old son of Richard) 12no and Ross Taylor (son of Spud) 1no. both showed their respective fathers the way, George was even subject to some sledging from Blake! How anyone can sledge a 12 year old, is quite beyond comprehension. It just proved once and for all why his ancestors got deported in the first place! Surely the cry of pick on someone your own size, could never be more apt with Blake towering over the young lad, who must be all of 3 feet tall in his cotton socks.
Ongar were able to restrict their hosts to a miserly 153 from their 40 overs, even with Ongar’s main bowlers (Blake, Matt and Dan) still having a total of 10 overs between them not used. A great bowling display by Ongar and a big thank you to Paul Taylor and Derek who both fielded superbly, Derek even taking a catch and Paul saving dozens of runs in the field.
After an excellent tea, Ongar opened up with Dan Shutts and Sam Sweeting and what a partnership it was. The pair played beautifully, defending the good balls (not many of them to worry about to be honest) and dispatching the bad ones to the boundary (lots of those!) to cruise to 153 off only 28 overs. It truly was a joy to watch to young Ongar batsmen completing dominating the opposition attack.
Then with scores tied Dan Shutts decided to take a quick single (maybe he was worried that there were only 12 overs to go?) and was promptly run out by Ongar reject Kieran Horgan. The only fielding highlight for Abridge on a truly shambolic day. Their bowling lacked any penetration and they seemed to quietly roll over and accept their fate.
So, the day that had started so badly for Ongar, turned around, culminating in the most crushing of victories. Surely the Villagers will have to do better in the return at Love Lane in August!
