Billericay v Ongar Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 06 Sep 2008 at 1.00
Match was Abandoned

Match report The final Saturday of the 2008 season saw a visit to what is probably one of the nicest grounds in the league with facilities that are on a par with a first class ground, it was just a shame that the weather would put a dampner on the proceedings.

With Billericay top of the table but level on points with Buckhurst Hill, they would be looking to secure maximum batting points so with one eye on the weather, they elected to bat first. Blake, on 49 wickets for the season and Matt Adders opened up and caused both openers problems with the ball swinging from one end and seaming from the other but the breakthrough wouldn't come. In between the rain breaks, the Billericay openers continued to steadily accumulate the runs until finally, Guilbert chased a wide delivery from Jamie and was comfortably caught beind by Nobbler. This brought Nathan Batson to the crease and to be honest, he made batting look very easy despite the conditions as he outscored his batting partner Southgate. Having very quickly reached 70, he was finally bowled by Jamie attempting an expansive drive. With the target of 200 still not reached, Dan Shutts was brought onto bowl and sure enough, Billericay lost their third wicket thanks to a fantastic diving catch confirming that Dan really does have a golden arm. Shortly after, the 200 was finally reached and having taken an early tea, it was a quick turnaround.

Nobbler, skippering again, had done his best to asist his counterpart in trying to get a game in and changed the batting order around to give people an opportunity to prove themselves. Dan Shutts opened up with Rakesh and took Nobbler's words to enjoy himself at face value and played a shot a ball until his leg stump was sent flying. This brought Pinal to the crease and he and Rakesh looked very comfortable in difficult conditions frustrating the Billericay bowlers with solid defence and good attacking shots as well. Unfortunately, at 29 for 1, the rain came again and after inspections by the umpires, the square was deemed unfit to play any further.

Word came through that Buckhurst Hill's game had been rained off so that meant that the title was Billericay's - cue celebrations. Congratulations to Billericay. A good side and a decent set of players who play their cricket in the right way without the attitude of certain other teams that we are forced to play against.
