Match report
The sun finally came out on Ongar at last, just in time for their final home game of the season, where they were looking to secure back to back home wins after doing thebusiness against The Ping the previous week.
Old Parks won the toss and not surprisingly inserted Ongar on a dampish track. Zammo (6) was caught at 2nd slip early on, but Micky Ayres and Stick made steady progress in trying to ensure that wickets were kept in hand for once. After Stick (10) was also caught at 2nd slip Rakesh(18) then offered Micky support, until at 61 from 27 overs they decided that it was time to put their foot on the gas, and after striking 3 boundary fours already in the over, Rakesh was brilliantly caught one handed in the covers. Simmsy (10) and Sam Adders were soon to follow but Mick had stuck to his task magnificently, finally falling in the 38th over for 51. Just the sort of innings that Ongar had been sadly lacking all season. It was now time for Blake (21) and Matt Adders to have some fun, Matt in particular in impressive form striking 41 from only 27 deliveries before running himself out trying to pinch a 2nd. Tall Paul(0) didn’t last long but just to emphasise the length of the Ongar batting line up, Pinal(19no) coming in at 10 and Nobbler at 11 were able to keep up the momentum, as the Ongar innings closed on 199-9. All thanks to the platform supplied by Micky, Ongar were able to score 100 from the final 17 overs.
After tea, Old Parks were never allowed to get started, and soon found themselves 4-3 thanks to some great bowling from Matt and Blake. Matt in particular really finding some form with the ball. Only Robbins, who looked a class apart from the rest of the Old Parks batters was able to cope with the Ongar attack as Jamie replaced Matt at the castle end. Robbins was in such good touch, Ongar skipper Nobbler, simply put the field back and allowed him to get off strike. A tactic that worked perfectly until the arrival of Bunting. The pair batted very sensibly as Ongar introduced the twin spin attack of Rakesh and Pinal in an attempt to get them to hit the ball in the air. But afterno success, reverted back to the new ball pairing of Blake and Matt and it was Matt who made the breakthrough, finally getting rid of Robbins (71) who edged the ball to Nobbler’s right, having flung himself at it, Nobbler parried the ball to Micky and it nestled nicely in between his thighs and thus having not touched the ground, and after a small consultation between the umpires he had to depart. Ongar hoped that this would prove to be just the bit of good fortune that they had been looking for that both Matt and Blake were able to strike again, just leaving Bunting and the incoming no. 11 to survive the final 4 overs. And all thanks to some sensible batting and not for the want of trying Ongar were unable to take the last wicket, leaving Old Parks to cling on to a draw, as their innings closed on 137-9. Ongar’s wicket takers, Blake 17-9-39-5, Matt 11-1-38-3 and Jamie 7-0-24-1.
A really good all round performance by Ongar with bat and ball, and also good support for the bowlers in the field. If Ongar are able to keep up this level of performance on a more consistent basis, it surely bodes well for next year.
