Match report Ongar travelled to Benfleet, seriously devoid of numbers as once again, large numbers of the playing membership had decided that they had better things to do with their Saturday afternoon. And with a late cry off, as the players prepared to leave The Lane, thanks must go to Matt Adcock who was able to call upon a friend at literally no notice to at least give Ongar a full compliment of 11.

Stand in skipper Stick lost the toss on an average looking track and the hosts had no hesitation in inviting Ongar to bat. And with the players available, Ongar were simply not able to do it, Blake apart who scored an unbeaten 35 out of Ongar’s 56, which also included 7 extras. The second highest score was Micky Ayres 4.

After tea, Ongar bowled well, with Blake taking 2 wickets, whilst Jamie had no luck at the other end, Coles still having time to drop his obligatory catch. Benfleet taking just 15.4 overs to wrap the game up by 8 wickets. Game over by 4.17pm.

Personally I was embarrassed for myself and for the club as I wear the shirt of Ongar Cricket Club with pride and it hurt like hell to go to Benfleet with such a pitifully weak side. I apologised to Blake on behalf of Ongar Cricket Club, and myself although I felt too ashamed to look him in the eye after the game. What was the point in inviting the guy half way around the World, to waste his time playing for Ongar when he could do so much better.

The club has already asked its membership to attend an EGM in order that they decide where Ongar plays its cricket next season, there are certainly one or two, who played in this fixture this afternoon that would say that this game pretty much helped make their minds up for them! We certainly wont retain the players expected to turn up week in week out, to play for a club that simply has no chance of competing, they are quickly going to realise not to waste their time.

Thanks to the guys who did make the trip to Benfleet, they tried their best and that is all that can be asked.
