Match report
It was the wet weather that beat Ongar this week.
Having won the toss and electing to insert a weakened Stanford Le Hope, Ongar got off to a good start with Blake (1-9) and Jamie(2-28) making early inroads into the top order. Despite having a few direction problems (I said direction), Zammo first cleaned bowled Barker and then repeated the feat by knocking over Shearer's middle stump. In between this, Blake finally got an LBW decision from Bill 'the power' Taylor. Having turned down two good shouts, both Nobbler and Lovey were poised to go up for appeal number three and sure enough when Blake hit Mark Nuttall on the pads for the third time, up went the keeper, up went first slip and up went the finger. It's fair to say that the ball was going on to hit the middle stump but it was still amusing to hear Bill acknowledge that after two good shouts he had to give that one!
Blake continued to cause problems with Robinson continually taking his bottom hand off the bat as though he was starting a motor mower and with Poulton (completed with yellow hair), struggling to deal with Jamie's length (no pun intended after his direction problems), the OGB's felt they could run through the under strength visitors but the weather was always going to be an issue. Coles, back in the side after his tummy upset, took on the role of Ian McCaskill giving regular weather updates. At one stage he pointed out that the tower at Kelvedon Hatch had dissappeared from view - I'm sure after dropping a catch and letting the ball go straight through his legs, Zammo probably wished that Coles, like the tower, had disappeared.
At 42-3, the rain, that had been falling for most of the afternoon, got heavier and common sense prevailed (for a change) with the players leaving the field and subsequently having an early tea (another fine effort from Jo). With the rain continuing to fall and with no break in the clouds, both the captains and the umpires agreed that the game would be abandoned so it was handshakes all round and six points each.
