Ongar Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v West Essex on Sat 19 Jul 2008 at 1.00
Ongar Cricket Club Lost by 8 wickets

Match report The 1st XI continued their woeful run with a fifth defeat in a row although it was fair to say that once again the toss played a big part in the game. With a damp wicket and overhead cloud cover, it was a toss that Nobbler, skipper for the day, desperately wanted to win but alas, the West Essex skipper called correctly and duly inserted the home side.

Ongar found themselves in desperate trouble at 16 for 4 with Jamie 'Zammo' Abbot, Joe Curtis, Dan Shutts and Pinal Patel all dismissed cheaply as the ball continued to swing and seam in the bowler friendly conditions. Once again, Zammo can feel hard done by as he was triggered LBW by umpire Bill 'The Power' Taylor who having turned down two other shouts decided he must be out this time. Rakesh Bagga and Micky Ayres managed to steady the ship by digging in and pushing the ball around and punishing the rare bad ball before Pam was unlucky to be caught behind off of a ball that lifted and just clipped the glove. The remaining batsman came and went all too quickly before Rakesh was finally stumped for a classy and very valuable 82 which saw the Ongar innings close on 154 from 49 overs.

As the afternoon went on, the conditions started to change. The sun came out and a strong cross breeze saw the wicket completely dry out which offered the Ongar bowlers none of the assistance that their counterparts enjoyed. Typical. This was emphasised from the first over when opener Irfan Riaz hit Matt Adcock for consecutive sixes from the first two deliveries and got the West Essex innings off to the kind of start that in all honesty killed any hope that Ongar had of winning this game. Riaz continued to play an innings that consisted of a mixture of classic strokes and some that were less than textbook but he took the game away from Ongar very quickly with some powerful hitting. The home side didn't do themselves any favours by dropping several catches, one in particular by Stick who dropped Riaz. All I can say is what do Cindy, Barbie, Tiny Tears and Stick's catch have in common - they are all dollies.

The visitors quickly polished off the required 155 with Riaz remaining not out on 102 to guide his side to an 8 wicket victory leaving the home side with nothing more than yet another cold shower to look forward to.

Poor old Stick will have nightmares about 'that' catch and couldn't escape, even in the sanctuary of Sainsburys on Sunday morning whereby he bumped into Joe, who seeing Stick laden with carrier bags offered him some assistance in case he dropped them!!
