Ongar Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Old Brentwoods on Sat 12 Jul 2008 at 1.00
Ongar Cricket Club Lost by 15 Runs

Match report Snatching defeat from the claws of victory is how you would sum up this disappointing defeat to local rivals Old Brentwoods.

After the heavy rain of the last few days, the Love Lane wicket was understandably looking damp, but still in remarkable condition given the amount of rain that had fallen. Ongar were delighted and not a little surprised to actually win a toss. Good work from vice skipper Lovey, who had no hesitation in inserting Old Brentwoods. We were then treated to a master class of seam bowling from The Blakester, who once again proved how unplayable he is on a damp track, tearing the Old B's apart, as one by one the Old B's batters quickly departed the scene. Matt Adcock ruined the parade, inducing an edge from opener Mahmood and thus denying Blake the perfect 10 but nether less he probably recorded the best bowling figures ever produced by an Ongar player in a league fixture. Finishing with figures of 16 overs 4 maidens 9-35. It was truly an honour to be on the same field to witness it at close quarters. Old B's being cleaned out for only 84.

Ongar then found themselves in unknown territory being made to bat before tea. Jarvo and Jamie began nervously with both getting off the mark thanks to the aid of a dropped catch. However they managed to get to 18 before the inevitable happened and Jarvo was bowled for 9. Pinal (5) batting at 3 didn’t last long, and unfortunately Jamie was then caught behind for 12. Dan Shutts was looking good (6) before being bowled by the ever dangerous Ash, with the last ball before tea, which left the game still very much in the balance with Ongar 39-4.

After tea, Rakesh was looking solid, but Ongar were unable to produce the one partnership required, or one big over to put the game beyond doubt as they continued to creep agonisingly towards the Old B's total, whilst continuing to lose wickets along the way. Matt Adcock (6) Blake (0) Too Tall Paul (0), Nobbler (2) and Stick (2) (caught and bowled off this knee!) all came and went leaving Lovey and Rakesh to score the 16 runs still required, unfortunately it was not to be as Rakesh (15) was the last to fall, with Ongar bowled out for 69. Ash as always a handful on any wicket finishing with figures of 12 overs 6-31. All in all a huge disappointment, not least for Blake after his magnificent bowling performance. It remains to be seen whether Ongar's batting will recover from such a confidence sapping performance, in the weeks ahead.

Well done Blakey
