Ongar Cricket Club Lost By 5 Wickets
Match report
Ongar made the short trip to local rivals Epping, knowing they were going to be in for a tough afternoon, with only 5 of the previous weeks first XI available. With no elected skipper or vice available and also missing the experience of Nobbler, it was left to Stick to skipper the side. On a wicket which would be best described as under prepared, Stick lost the toss and Ongar were duly inserted by the hosts.
This weeks opening partnership of Tom Stock and Jamie got off to a more than reasonable start, putting on 34 before Tom fended off a short ball straight to silly mid off for 15. Jamie (24) was then given out to another mystery LBW decision, prompting good bat speed, helmet speed and glove speed as the waiting Ongar batsman dodged the missiles of frustration! Micky Ayres soon found out that it doesn’t pay to question an umpire’s decision. Having passed comment while at the non-striking end as to the merits of Jamie’s LBW decision, he was promptly struck on the pad and swiftly removed from the game by the same umpire! Matt Adders was then sent in up the order to see if he could produce the fireworks of the previous week, but after striking two boundary fours he was quickly found out by The Pings bowler Roy (yes that’s the same one who played for West Essex earlier in the season and as recently as last season for Woodford Green. I guess there must be a better exchange rate for ones Rupees at Epping at the moment!) who knocked back his off stump, all too quickly from Ongar’s point of view. Pinal Patel on first team debut was the only other batsman to register double figures (11 no) going in at 7 he was left high and dry as the Ongar innings folded miserably, despite the likes of Stick, Blake and Steve Adders taking up 3 of the last 4 places in the order, Ongar were skittled out for a lowly 93 in just 28 overs.
After tea, The Ping were rapidly reduced to 0-2 from Blakes first over, with umpire Seeberan thankfully feeling well enough to continue after the break despite requiring treatment by an Ambulance earlier on in the day for a heart problem. He jolted back into the action with a raised finger from the third ball of the innings for another interesting LBW. N. Iqbal (9) was Blakes next victim, Steve Adders clutching a high steepling catch at point, not easy in the swirling wind, but without doubt the catch of the day, and indeed without question the season, was taken rather surprisingly by Stick in the gully who leapt high and with almost Inspector Gadget like arms extended his right arm sufficiently to take an absolute screamer. Cue much hysteria from Stick and total disbelief from the Epping batsman Majeed along with the other 10 Ongar players! So, Ongar certainly felt that it might be their day, with The Ping faltering on 25-4 but a sensible partnership between Majeed (a different one) and Roy saw the home team to within 5 of victory before the golden arm of Dan Shutts was to strike in his first over. Epping eventually winning the game by 5 wickets.
A very good display by Ongar with the ball, for once backed up by some good fielding. Blake in particular finishing with terrific figures of 10 ov 3-16 against a much changed Epping side, now featuring 8 Asians, and with two Epping’s stalwarts in Geoff Maynard not required at 8 in the batting line up and Dave Bickley not even getting to turn his arm over despite 6 bowlers being used. Strange times indeed at The Ping!
