Ongar Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Benfleet on Sat 28 Jun 2008 at 1.00
Ongar Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets

Match report Ongar played host to Benfleet, with both teams level on points so far this season. With Lovey still away, it was Jamie's turn to be the replacement for the replacement as it were and skipper the side. Just to prove it makes no difference whoever flicks the coin, Jamie lost the toss (I think that’s 7 times out of 8 Ongar have lost the toss this season). Anyway as per normal Ongar were invited to bat.

Ongar got off to a good start with 31 on the board off 5 overs before Jamie (23) was brilliantly caught left handed in the slips by one of the Wright brothers. That’s not one of THE Wright brothers, just in case anyone’s confused. And just for Matt Adcock who probably has no idea who they were in the first place. Don’t worry Matt! Matt Jarvis next to go also caught by Wright in the slips. Stick (11) was comprehensively yorked soon after and the match began to follow a similar pattern to that of the previous week, where a promising start eventually faltered to 148 all out. Ongar were soon 145-8, despite a breezy 42 from only 44 balls from Blake, when Paul Stolworthy on debut joined Mad Matt Adcock at the crease. Matt unable to run due to a leg injury sustainedin the early hours, thanks to playing football in the pitch dark. Good idea Matt! Decided that he might as well do what he does best and just whack the ball. And that’s exactly what he did, smashing a blistering 48 from only 29 balls, against the opening bowlers, brought back to clean up the tail. Before he was finally caught on the deep cow boundary. Paul decided that he would take over from Matt upon the arrival of Sid, and produced a quick fire 21 from 19 balls before being comprehensively bowled, which rapped up Ongar’s innings on 194 with still 6 overs to go.

After tea Jamie struck early removing both of the Benfleet openers with only 28 on the board. However a steady partnership between skipper Prophet and M. Tremain saw Benfleet recover to 71 before Tremain, flashed at a wide one from Blake and was caught behind by Nobbler, thus ending Blakes wicket less run, stretching back some 45 overs! With the final 20 overs to go Benfleet required a little over 80 with 7 wickets in hand, although very handily placed, it was very much to play for. Skipper Prophet was to fall LBW to Sidney for a patient 43, but Ongar were not able to break the back of the Benfleet innings and the Wright brothers produced a crucial partnership of 59, to bring the visitors to within sight of victory before Matt Jarvis, having his first bowl of the season, claimed a well-deserved wicket. However Benfleet eventually achieved the 195 required for victory for the loss of only 5 wickets, with 4 overs still in hand.

Once again a competitive performance by Ongar, but just lacking the ability to change the game in their favour by getting a vital wicket or two when the situation demanded.
