Ongar Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Billericay on Sat 21 Jun 2008 at 1.00
Ongar Cricket Club Lost by 6 wickets

Match report Billericay arrived at The Lane top of the SNEL div 3 and unbeaten thus far this season. What time they arrived no one is quite sure, surfice to say a lot before
Ongar did anyway.

By the time Ongar started arriving circa 12:00hrs, they had already got their cones in position and started their comprehensive pre match routines. They even nicked the home teams dressing rooms! Ongar continued their pre match routines as normal, by trying to work out who had drunk the most on their respective
friday nights out. Or who had spent longer in the bus shelter in Matt Adcock's case!

Ongar with no Captain, since the departure of Big Dave and with vice captain, Lovey, away in Corfu slapping on the factor 100, it was left to the club secretary, Nobbler to toss the coin. As it happens it appeared to make no difference whatsoever as once again Ongar lost the toss and were duly inserted. There was just time for the Billericay boys to 'rope' the outfield of excess moisture now the rain had abated before the umpires took to the field.

Ongar got off to a solid start with Micky Ayres and Jamie 'Russ' Abbott showing the way, until Mick became the first LBW of the day for 13, with the score on 39. Russ and Stick got the score up to 71 before Stick forgot he was supposed to use the bat in his hand and was cleaned up, offering no shot for 7.

That was the start of the Ongar demise, collapsing from 81-2 off 20 overs to 148ao from 42 overs. To be fair it was the best bowling Ongar had faced all season, but they were not helped by to two interesting LBW decisions against Nobbler (0) second ball and Matt Jarvis(25). Russ once again top scoring with 41 and once again looking real class, there was also good work down the order by veteran Powelly (18).

After another fine Sandra Adcock tea, Ongar got off to a promising start with Matt Jarvis taking a good low catch of Matt Adcock, but with too few runs on the board, Ongar were not able to build any pressure, with opener Guilbert (87no) and Batson (36) able to bring Billericay within sight of victory, before a late tumble of wickets, saw Billericay cruise to victory by 6 wickets. With The Blakester wicketless again, the Ongar wicket takers, were Matt Adcock 7ov 1-28, Powelly 3ov 2-11 and Steve Adcock 2.1ov 1-9.

So, although on the day Ongar were well beaten, at least it was with the knowledge that they were beaten by the better side, who will surely bounce
back to SNEL div 2 at the first attempt. This is a shame, as it was a pleasure to take part in a game played in the proper manner, by two teams who were only interested in supporting their fellow team mates as oppossed to shouting obscenities at the opposition, which sadly is usually the case.
