Stanford Le Hope v Ongar Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 07 Jun 2008 at 1.00
Match was Drawn

Match report People who think cricket is boring may have to think again after this game, a game which went to the last ball and could have resulted in a win for either side.

Stand in skipper Andy Love, making yet another comeback, won the toss and promptly invited the hosts to bat in conditions that were deemed bowler friendly - it was fair to say that the green wicket could have done with a cut and a roll. It was hardly 'flaming' June either with the boys sporting long sleeve shirts and jumpers as well but then I always said that Stanford has it's own climate - miserable.

Once again, Blakey made early inroads into the top order taking three early wickets and was ably supported by Will Stuart-Jones who was making a most welcome surprise appearance. Will phoned Nobbler at 11.50 on Saturday morning to say that due to a wash out up north, he was available. He duly made his way down the A1 for which the club are extremely grateful - so much so we didn't charge him his tea money, can't say fairer than that !!

The only batsmen to make any form of impression against the Ongar attack were Pete Gray (70) and Poulton (39). The remaining SLH batsmen found it almost impossible to score off of Blake's bowling who finished with incredible figures of 5 for 36 from 26 overs including 12 maidens. The highlight, I'm guessing, was a ball that cut back and just clipped the leg bail of the SLH Aussie batsman. Will, who it was fair to say was puffing out of his backside towards the end of his spell, finished with 2 for 47 and Jamie Abbott also chipped in with two wickets as SLH finished on 159 for 9 from 52 overs.

Before the game, the boys would have settled for this but there was almost a sign of disappointment that SLH were allowed to creep over the 150 mark, thanks mainly to a couple of lusty blows from the SLH opening bowler.

The Ongar response got off to a bad start losing Micky Ayres, bowled for nought and hence joins the duck pond, but Jamie and Stick soon started to get to grips with a tricky pitch and some unsavoury gamesmanship by the home side pushing the total up to 47 before Stick was undone by a ball that lifted and he was caught for 19. Jamie soon followed as he was bowled for 34 but useful contributions from Dan Shutts (22), Matt Jarvis (18) and Blake (34) looked to have pushed Ongar towards the finishing line but as the gamesmanship increased, so more wickets fell and as the last ball of the match was bowled, Ongar needed four runs to win and SLH needed to take the final Ongar to claim victory.

With Matt Adcock at the wicket, you fancied that he would 'slap' a four as he does have one of the most natural eyes for a ball in the club. The outcome was a dot ball and so the match finished as draw. Whilst it was disappointing not to reach the required figure and gain a third victory in five games, all of the players were glad that a victory was not handed to the hosts.
