Ongar Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Woodford Green on Sat 31 May 2008 at 1.00
Ongar Cricket Club Won by 49 Runs

Match report For those of you who are familiar with Jerry Lee-Lewis, it really was a case of "goodness gracious Blake Hall's on fire" at Love Lane as high scoring Woodford Green were brought down to earth with a massive bump.

With Stick away for the weekend celebrating 40 years of existence and Lovey still awol, more changes were made to the 1st XI which saw Tom Stock leave the 2nd XI in the capable hands of the Club Captain and Matt Jarvis making his Love Lane debut.

A damp track invited the winner of the toss to field first and when the coin came down, not surprisingly the home side was invited to bat first. Skipper Big Dave opened up with Mickey Ayres but the opening partnership was short lived with 'Pam' given out caught behind, although there was a suggestion that it was bump ball, for nought. He was alarmingly followed by Jamie Abbot, triggered LBW, Blake who was comprehensively bowled as was Nobbler leaving the top order in tatters.

Big Dave was joined by Tom but soon after, the skipper was adjudged to be LBW for 27 so it was really down to Tom and Dan Shutts to restore some respectability to the score which they did so with some patient batting and good running between the wickets. Just as you felt that the partnership was going to kick on, Shutts played across the line to a fairly straight delivery and was bowled for 28. It was fair to say that there was still plenty of capable batsmen to come in but the useful Woodford Green attack sent back Dave Powell, Steve Adcock, Matt Jarvis and Matt Adcock in fairly quick succession leaving Tom stranded on 20 and Ongar with a paltry 111 or nelson as it's known in the cricketing fraternity to bowl with.

In all honesty, the feeling was that this was another week where points may be hard to come by as Woodford Green were supposedly a strong batting side but they hadn't come up against a bowler as metronomic as Blakey. The damp wicket was now drying on top and it's fair to say it was 'doing a bit'. Ongar got off to a great start with Matt Adcock trapping Sayeed in front for two and here the collapse started. A comical run out saw the sulk of all sulks from Davies whose equipment was thrown to all corners of Love Lane and when the danger man Singh was cleaned up by Blake, there was a belief that WG were for the taking. Blake continued to bowl just outside the off stump where the ball continued to dart into either the pads or the stumps and one by one, the Woodford Green batsmen were sent packing.

It was left to Blake to mop up the tail, something the club has lacked over the last few years and WG were finally all out for 62 leaving the OGB's with a 49 run victory. Whilst Blake will take the plaudits with his figures of 7-28, he was backed up by Matt Adcock (1-10) who bowled much better than he has in recent weeks and also by Jamie Abbott (1-13).

I'm sure the Woodford Green boys will remember the name Blake Hall and not just for the signpost on the A414!!
