Match report
Ongar played host to Buckhurst Hill, on an absolute scorcher of a day, as they begun their assault on the SNEL Div. 3! Big Dave lost the toss again and needless to say Ongar were invited to bat, I dare say BH having a quick kill in mind.
All pretty normal so far but thereafter all was a little surreal to say the least! Big Dave and Micky Ayres proceeded to rip into the BH attack in dramatic fashion. What a partnership they were, like two Superheroes, 'Batman and Robin', 'Penfold and Dangermouse', 'Torville and Dean'! It was POW, CRASH, WALLOP! Big Dave was first to his 50 off only 51 balls. The 100 partnership coming from only 19 overs, without one single maiden over being bowled by BH. Big Dave was the first to perish, caught after a juggle, at deep backward square leg, in the 30th over, for a truly brilliant 67 off 73 balls, with the score on 146. Not in living memory, had Ongar enjoyed such a great start to the season.
Micky Ayres duly completed his 50 before falling for an equally brilliant 58. Ongar began to wobble a little before some big hitting from new aussie import Blake Hall, scoring 36 from 35 balls and Dan Shutts (21), saw the Ongar innings close on 230-8 from their alloted 52 overs.
After tea, the Blakester opened up from the Pavillion end and gave Ongar the perfect start, with 5 consecutive maidens. Finally conceding a single in his 6th over, he ended his first spell figures of 0-18 from 10 overs, only failing to get a wicket due to the batsman not being good enough to get anywhere near the ball!
Not quite the same story from the other end, as first Madcock and then Dan Shutts, both struggled to find their line and length, bringing about a series of wides and no balls. However, just as always the golden arm of Dan Shutts was to provide the breakthrough with his very first ball of the season, a half tracker! I dont think the BH opener could believe his luck after being on the end of The Blakesters spell and duly dispatched the ball in the direction of Madcock who clutched it gleefully with two hands. Jamie Abbot, making is league debut for the OGB's was next to try his luck from the castle end and dispite being hit for four boundary fours in his first over, he came back well with two vital wickets which gave him figures of 2-36 from 4 overs.
Sid had replaced The Blakester at the Pavillion end and immediately removed the BH skipper second ball for 38. You see Blake you dont have to run in all that way and put all that effort in. You can just take two steps and get a wicket
just as easily! Sid, has still not quite got rid of his 4 ball, but he says this is just to keep the batsman interested, as he duly collected 3 wickets in double quick time (5 ov. 3-22).
After his little rest The Blakester returned at the castle end and what an inspirational move it was from the skipper, as he promptly dispatched the BH tail back to the hutch, finishing with figures from his second spell of 3.3 overs, 4-7! BH found themselves skittled out for just 109 with 13 overs to go.
20 BIG points for Ongar and top of the league. If only the season could finish now! You really had to be there to believe it, but this is not some fantasy game played out in your writers head, this DID actually happen for real. Quite incredible!
Man of the Match would have to go to Big Dave, who didn't put a foot wrong. Even losing the toss was a stroke of genius! Special praise also for Micky Ayres and of course, the Blakester, who has already shown what a good player he is. He will surely go on to be a major force in the SNEL div 3 this season.
