Orsett v Ongar Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 28 Jun 2008 at 1.00
Ongar Cricket Club Lost by 134 runs

Match report Ongar travelled to Orsett without the key players Sims, Ellis, Bagga, Patel & Sharma and so it was likely to be a day that some of the unsung members of the team would have to seize their chances if Ongar were to come away with a result.

With the Ongar bowlers itching to have a go first up after the limited opportunities at Billericay, Tom had decided that bowling first was the order of the day no matter what the pitch looked like. And so having duly won the toss again Matt Robinson and Jamie Watson spearheaded a new look opening bowling partnership. Sadly the new look partnership didn't last long with Matt pulling a muscle and having to withdraw himself from the attack after only 13 balls (unlucky for some!). With no one warmed up Tom threw the ball to the ever-keen Sam Sweeting. As it was young Jamie Watson took the first wicket getting one to jag back to one of the Orsett lefties to take a well-deserved wicket. Jamie almost took the second wicket that his bowling deserved when he induced an edge from the incoming right-handed number three. Unfortunately stand in keeper Tom took the catch one handed but the ball popped out of his hand as he landed. It was to prove and unfortunate miss as Plom went on to hit 152 not out which was otherwise chanceless. After bowling his 5 allowed overs Jamie gave way to Ian Groves who bowled with some nice shape into the right-hander but proved fairly expensive. At the other end Powelly replaced the expensive Sweeting. Sadly neither bowler could trouble the batsmen. Nor could sixth bowler Billy so Tom turned to another debutant Rob Fisher. New boy Rob bowls seam from a heady 6ft 7 and when he gets it right extracts some steepling bounce. Ironically Rob took his first Ongar wicket with one that hardly bounced at all and bowled the Orsett number two for 69. Rob's first ball to the number four was a real beauty and hinted at his promise as it seamed away from back of a length leaving the batsman to play and miss (well depending on your point of view!) Billy returned from the pavilion end to take a wicket caught behind before Nelly came on for a quick over but no joy from he top end.

After a decent tea Tom and Sam took to the field. Tom fell quickly chasing a truly awful bouncer and gloved the ball behind. Sweeting went next and was bowled by one that nipped back to take the very top of his off bail. Another week, another good ball, eh Sam? Unfortunately the experience of Powelly couldn't help and David edged one on to his stumps. Three wickets down brought Ian Groves out to join Jack Groves, who after some recent disappointments was looking calm and collected at the crease. Unfortunately for Jack, Ian was very calm and collected as Jack attempted a quick single after an off drive mid off. Ian was so calm and collected he stood completely motionless as Jack joined him at the non-striker's end. Duly run out Jack returned to the pavilion muttering that "Dad better get a fifty now". So after 13 overs Ongar were four down and Billy Ayres strode in to join the action. Ian seemed to be responding well to the run out incident and went on to score four fours in a gritty 24 at a time when Ongar were really up against it. With the score on 57 Ian departed and Ongar were stumbling towards another sub 100 score. Or so it seemed. As it happened Jamie Watson and Billy chose the perfect time to record their best ever scores in senior cricket. Its hard to do them both justice or categorise their efforts in just a few words but suffice to say Orsett were increasingly frustrated by the boy's efforts and ended up using nine bowlers against the Ongar pair. It would wrong to say they blocked it - Jamie who had upon arrival decided that the boundaries were so big that no one would score a boundary cracked six fours in his 40 including two glorious cover drives to the aforementioned longest boundary. Billy was not be outdone and scored four fours in his 43. Unfortunately the 67 run partnership ended when the uneven bounce lead to one popping up at Jamie who only looked on in horror as the ball looped back to the bowler. Rob was in next and got off the mark before getting run out to a sharp return throw. With Orsett sensing victory Nelly strode the crease and using his pad outside off stump frustrated Orsett for 11 overs. Surprisingly Billy was next to go being bowled with just an over to go as he missed a straight one. It was a shame that he fell short of his 50 but it had been a monumental effort from young Billy who had been in for 46 overs. With Nelly facing the last over, from the opener Tidman, Ongar hearts were in their mouths as Nelly continued to block in his unorthodox but effective way. But on the fourth ball of the last over disaster struck as one reared up to strike Nelly on the glove and was held at silly mid off. With no number 11 Ongar had lost....

Although it was ultimately fruitless it was an amazing effort from Billy, Jamie, Ian and Nelly whom had all played a part in the attempt to save the game. With this renewed confidence and some player’s back Ongar 2's could start to kick on again.
