Basildon & Pitsea v Ongar Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 26 Apr 2008 at 1.00 p.m.
Ongar Cricket Club Lost by 8 wickets

Match report Ongar commenced the 2008 season with a home draw against Basildon in the League Cup 1st round. Unfortunately due to circumstances beyond the cricket clubs control, the fixture had to be switched to Basildon. On a beautiful late spring day, but after a week of torrential rain, the toss was going to be all important, and yep you've guessed it, Ongar skipper Big Dave lost it! Needless to say, Ongar were duly inserted on a lush green, damp un, and were soon reduced to 15-7 off 19 overs.

Stick and Big Dave both dismissed 1st ball, Madcock 2nd ball, with Rakesh also for 0, plus Jamie Abbott on debut, rather unlucky to be given out LBW for another 0, resulting in 5 early introductions to the Duck Pond. Which will be need to upgraded to reservoir status very soon at this rate! Fortunately the Ongar tail wagged, with Keiran Horgan (15) along with Ongar veteran all rounder David Powell (9 no), both assisting this years recruit from Down Under, Blake Hall (yes, thats his name!) who crashed a hugely impressive 35 from only 47 balls. Not bad for a number 11, who only touched down in the Homeland, three days before hand. Dont think he'll be finding himself batting at no. 11 again this season, eh Skip!

Ongar were finally dismissed for 90 from 38.2 overs, the Bas Vegas wicket takers were A. Kiani 5 overs 1-2, L. Lewis 7 overs 2-4, D. Bedford 9 overs 3-21 and A. Abbas 8.2 overs 4-24.

After a very nice tea which was enjoyed by all, Bas Vegas opener S. Noble made short work of chasing down the Ongar total, scoring a very impressive 55 from only 66 balls faced, supported by J. Milner 17no. Bas Vegas, duly secured their passage through to round 2, for the loss of only 2 wickets from 20.1 overs. Blake, easily the pick of the Ongar bowlers, completing his first 9 overs on English soil, conceding only 14 runs. His first 5 overs were all slightly too short, but once he had re-adjusted his length from what is a good length back home to the more pitched up delivery required in England, he bowled immaculately. Unfortunately runs were only to easily available at the other end, with rest of the Ongar attack struggling to find any kind of line and length (still it was only the 1st game of the season, eh boys!)

Ongars two wickets both fell to the evergreen Powell, who, coming on with defeat already in sight, finished with very tidy figures of 2 overs 2-9. Fine reward for bowling a good line and length right from the off.

In summing up, Ongar were soundly beaten, by a team 2 divisions higher, but once they had lost the toss, were always going to be struggling. A much needed run out and I'm sure that everyone that played will feel better for the experience of getting their first game under their belts.

Ongar look to have found a real match winner in Blake and can now look forward to the first league game on the 10th of May, when they play host to Buckhurst Hill.
