Ongar Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Orsett & Thundersley on Sat 16 Aug 2008 at 1.00
Ongar Cricket Club Won by 4 wickets

Match report Well what can I say the day started of on a bad foot when I was told that we were down to 10! But we did feel that with the bowling we had in the side we could give ourselves every chance against most teams. Orsett arrived and Peter went to do the toss with there acting captain, hoping their skipper would call wrong which he did. With no hesitation Peter inserted the opposition in good bowling conditions.

We took the field keen to get the win that the weather robbed us of last week. Peter and Rob opened with both of them causing the openers some problems, However the left hander started to get going from some short deliveries from Rob “the fish” Fisher. He then hit one in the air from Rob, which stayed in the air for ages unfortunately Rob was unable to keep hold of it. At this point it was starting to look like they may put a healthy total on the board. Peter then started to get the ball to swing away and got the left hander out for 20 with a big inswinger. Peter then took the number three for only 2 caught behind with an away swinger. Rob then got in on the act bowling the number 4 and then the other opener. We then had the skipper in, another left hander who lasted one ball, a Maddog off cutter special. This brought in the Number 7 Harding who seemed to have read a different script and just swung the bat causing some serious damage to Peter’s figures taking 14 off five balls, before becoming Rob’s third wicket. A couple of overs later brought the end of Robs spell with figures of 8-0-45-3. We then brought golden arm Jake in to the attack who didn’t take long to get in the action with 2 wickets in just 3.2 overs for 15 and Maddog finished off his 5 wicket haul with two LBW’s and figures of 12-3-27-5, which he hoped would mean the game would finish in the same way the last two times he had taken 5 or more with an Ongar win.

Although we were missing Tom, Chris, Jamie and David Powell in the batting we opened the batting with Mark Suker and Tom Hartington who got us off to a great start and at tea OCC where 60 without loss and no scares. However as can happen the break suited the bowling side and shortly after the break Tom was out to a good moving ball. Then the Ongar collapse with Rupert out first ball and Jack out in his second over caught, with shall we say not the best shot selection. This brought Sam to the wicket also out for a Duck, incame Mark Norman who was looking in good touch until he played a loose shot and was bowled. This brought Maddog the captain to the crease with 10 or so needed. Mark was then caught behind and incame Jake with 4 needed to win. He place a ball through second slip for 3 quick runs and the scores were level and Ongar could not lose. The next over Jake played the wining shot through gulley and Ongar had there third win of the season.

Bring on the old enemy Epping away next week, where we will need to show the same level of determination and control.
