Match report
Ongar 2nd XI travelled to Stanford hoping to take the opportunity to do the double over a team near the top of the league.
As it happened some of that SLH team were holidaying in Cyprus so Ongar found themselves taking on a less than full strength opposition. To make things more interesting however both teams were taking on the weather.
Play got underway at 1.07 after an early shower had cleared. Openers Tom and David Powell got Ongar off to a steady start against two of the remaining SLH second team players (albeit batsmen rather than bowlers). With the pitch not playing as badly as its green top would suggest the runs started to flow as Tom found runs either side of the wicket behind square as Tavio struggled for a consistent line. At the other end Ongar's DJ Powelly was finding SLH's A Powley's bowling much more accurate.
As Powley cancelled out Powell Tom was starting to accelerate at the other end against the short spells of th second and third change bowlers. After the envitable rain break the hundred partnership came up in the 19th over and despite another rain break things continued at the same decent pace until the 22nd over when Powelly pulled a Powely full toss to square leg where SLH's 13 year old Messinger took a good catch.
Powelly's dismissal for 22 brought to an end Ongars best opening partnership of the summer at 113. Next in was the in form Simsy.
With Tom looking good for a rapid century he promptly got for 83 trying to sweep the spin of Vicgory. Jamie Watson was in at number four and continued to impress stroking some lovely cover drives and matching Simsy run for run in a partnership of 44.
A third rain break during which tea was taken saw Ongar's innings curtailled even further and during a short resumption to the innings the score was taken up to 178. Sensing that yet more rain was on the way, Ongar were in the unusual position of being able to declare and promptly did so as Sam Sweeting was bowled for 4 leaving Ongar on 178 for 4.
With 6 batting points in the bag Ongar now had everything to play for and were very adamently against match abandonment.
With the weather raining dry a pumped up Peter Ellis shared the new ball with Rob Fisher, whom it was hoped would use his height to exploit some of springy bounce that the Ongar batsmen had had to deal with.
Peter however took the first wicket as Powely slashed at one just outside off and could only succeded in picking out Ongar's specialist gully fielder Sam Sweeting who managed hold on at the second attempt.
At the other end Rob found himself bowling over after over at SLH's numbr 3 who found himself fishing at Fisher. As both batsmen played and missed Ongar's field evolved quickly and both Peter and Rob found themselves with the rare luxury of three slips, two gullys and a point.
Despite all the playing and missing and the army of fielders waiting for edges the next two wickets fell to an LBW for Rob and a bowled for Peter. These wickets brought SLH's captain Hitchcock to the crease. After another quick wicket for Rob (this time a catch at cover by Jack Groves) the rain returned and SLH were increasingly eager to come off. Despite resisting at first the ascendant Ongar team grudginly went off.
After another 20 mins of rain the skies cleared and thanks to the remarkably fast draining SLH ground the teams were back on.
Hitchcock and his number 6 Tavio dug in at first and with Peter struggling to swing the damp ball and Rob tiring after 10 aggresive and accurate overs started to find runs increasingly easy to come by.
Sensing this Ongar brought on Powelly for some of his wobblers, at the other end Billy Ayres came on for a twirl. Billy made the vital breakthrough with Hitchcock going for yet another powerful lofted cover drive he could only succede in driving straight to Jack Groves who took a juggling catch at a precisely positioned extra cover.
