Match report
And so Ongar travelled to local rivals and fellow strugglers Old Brentwoods. With a win in the home game and with the batting strengthened Ongar rightly had hopes of notching a third win of the season.
Tom returning to the team after first team duties lost the toss and under grey skies Ongar were put in to bat on a good pitch.
Sam Sweeting was the first to fall snicking one through to the keeper from the left arm opening bowler. That brought Chris Sims to the crease.
Three balls later Chris was on his way back to the classy Old B's pavilion having snicked one to the slip. It was a controversial wicket with the home team umpire referring the decision as to whether the ball had carried to the Ongar unpire at square leg. It was a tough one to call but suffice to say the benefit of the doubt went with the bowler rather than as usual, with the batsman.
Simsy's departure brought Micky Ayres into the fold and steadily Micky and Tom brought some stability to the innings. Sadly it was not to last as the Old B's captain and opening bowler L Rich got one to jump a little bit and found the edge of Mick's bat.
Next in was Ongar's batting coach D Powell and not a moment too son at a precarious 26 for 3 in the 10th Over. Tom and Powelly steadied the ship and scored runs at a decent pace mixing up some nice boundaries and a some sharp running.
However having brought up the 54 partnership the sharp running undid the good work as Tom pushed one in to the covers and called "Yesssss.....noo......arrggh... damm" as he was run out for 37. It was a premature end to an innings that had been under no real threat at any stage.
With Ongar's answer to Stuart Broad (aka Jamie Watson) striding to the crease hopes where high that Ongar could could continue the momementum and post a target of 150 or so.
It wasn't to be as Jamie was bowled by the wily left arm spinner Russell. Ben Groves entered the fray next
