Match report
Ongar won the toss yet again and under some big clouds elected to bowl first. As ever Peter Ellis started up from the pavillion end with new boy Pinal Patel starting from the Castle end.
Peter was the first to make a breakthrough bowling F Yusaf for 7. Sadly for the Old Parks number two this was not to be his last contribution to the Old Parks innings. Number 3 Kahn was next to go falling to a sharp catch by David Thorby again off Peter's bowling. Pinal had struggled with the slope at the Castle end of strip in use and was replaced by another new boy Rishi Sharma, making his home debut for the O's.
Rishi looks another very useful find from the Bagga scouting programme and sent down 11 tidy overs at a handy pace bowling the number four and inducing the five batsman to edge to gully allowing Sam Sweeting to dive forward to claim his now seemingly mandatory catch per game.
Peter was still toiling away from the Pavillion end missing out with a couple of dropped catches which should have given him wickets three and four.
At the other end a change of pace was in order and young Timothy Marter ran off an ankle injury to come on to bowl some of his mystery spinners. Bowling with loop and giving the ball lots of rip young Tim struggled with consistency but bowled some beautiful deliveries. One pitched on middle and turned sharply to off leaving the hapless number six to edge straight to Christopher Sims behind the wicket. A few overs later the dipping flight and turn that Tim achieves did for the number seven batsman who played down the wrong line to be bowled. It was a tremendous effort from Tim on his home debut and he's certainly one to look out for in the future.
At the other end Peter took his third wicket, finally accounting for the Ol Parks skipper W Yusaf who'd opened. It was a interesting LBW decision from the Old Parks umprie F Yusaf who gave his Dad out LB after Peters appeal of "Hoooowwssszaaatttttttt????.......... come on!" The "come on" bit seemed to do the trick as up went the finger sometime after the appeal had commenced.
This wicket was not enough to see Peter through to the end of the innings as Billy Ayres came on for some off spin and at the other end Jake Oliver got a quick over in and bowled the hard hitting number 8.
Old Parks reached 200 for 9 and promptly declared after 51 overs.
After a Stock family tea a new opening partnership of Tom and Sam Sweeting took to the middle. Both looked tidy and in no reald danger though runs were hard to come by with the Old Parks openers quickly finding their line & length.
Sam was first to go after his promising start was ended by one that seamed through his defences to bowl him. Dave Thorby stepped in to the action and then back out in the same over having not troubled the scorers.
Chris was in at four and looked like a player in good touch, middling everything and rapidly reaching 10 before he missed a traigh one. With 3 wickets down for not very many it was not an ideal time for the attacking Pinal to come in. As with Simsy he loked in good touch but didn't last long before he creamed a lofted drive into the stomach of the opening bowler who looked pretty surprised to have held the catch.
Rishi was in next and got another good seaming delivery and was bowled in a carbon copy of Sam's dismissal. Guest player Steven Kilfedder was in next and drove his first delivery through the covers for a pleasant two. It deserves special mention as these were his first runs in club cricket.
All this time Tom was still there, not looking in too much trouble but at the same time not really scoring very many. Sensing that even 1 bonus batting point was looking doubtful Tom decided to up the run rate. It proved not to be a good plan as his first lofted drive was well middled but the trajectory was all wrong allowing the Old Parks skipper W Yusaf to run back from mid off to take a running one handed catch. Which yet again took the Old Parks team by surprise.
This brought Billy Ayres to the crease. At the other end Steven's promising batting career was cut short by another good ball from Zafar who had overcome a warning from the Umpire for running on the pitch to bag a five for. In came Jake Oliver for his 2nd XI batting debut. The youngsters induced a bowling change with Old Parks bringing on a spinner. Sadly this particular spiiner had played one's cricket and soon bowled Billy and Jake.
With some belligerent batting from Peter at number 10 Ongar went down fighting but could only muster 80 before Tim was caught for 3 and the innings closed.
It was a shame for Ongar that the recent good form could not continue and the dropped catches were certainly disappointing after some great fielding displays in recent weeks. There were definitely positives with both Rishi and Tim impressing and with competition for places growing the future of the 2's looks bright.
