Ongar Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Stanford Le Hope on Sat 07 Jun 2008 at 1.00
Ongar Cricket Club Won by six wickets
Match report
With skies overcast above Ongar 2nd XI welcomed back regular skipper Tom from first team duty and were eager to put the nightmare of the previous weeks beating at Woodford Green behind them.
Yet again Ongar won the toss and looking for some early movement through the air chose to put Stanford in. With Peter and Rakesh opening Stanford were off to a slow start. The pressure told and the number 2 was out quickly spooning the ball to Steve Adcock at cover. After Peter had bowled the captain who came in at 3 wickets tumbled regularly. Peter was the lucky one however with Rakesh creating the pressure by bowling economically but being unableto take wickets himself.
After none overs of Rakesh's Blakey like economy (but sadly without the Aussie's wickets) Matt 'the unit' Robinson came on to bowl some accurate seam up from the Castle end. However the worst ball of his spell brought the wicket with half tracker outside off stump being slashed hard and wide to a diving Sam Sweeting at gully. It was a truly magnificant catch from the big man and got the Ongar wicket taking machine going again. Matt swiftly took a couple more bowled to end with well deserved figures of 3 - 15 off 9. With the SLH number 10 put his middle order to shame with some lusty hitting through off and resolute defence Steve Adcock came on to bowl some nagging off spin.
Peter though was ploughing away at the other end having taken a wicket in each of the overs skipper Tom had threatened to take him off.
SLH ended on 101 all out, which could hav been 30 lower had the number 10 and 11 chipped in and the opener returned to the crease after being hit in the face by a lifter from Peter.
Over tea Ongar ate nervously thinking that the target could have been lower but knew that after the success against Old b's they could chase targets effectively.
Tom and Rakesh went in first and immediately found the SLH bowling more effective thatn their batting as they managed to hit the right areas and got movement off the drying pitch.
Tom went first ater nicking a pearler from one of the openers. Number 3 Steve A went soon after repeating Tom's dismissal to the opener from the other end.
Adversity seemed to fire Rakesh in to an agressive mood and increasingly he took the game to SLH, leaning in to some of his textbook cover drives on one knee. Simsy had been the mainstay of the Old B's run chase a few weeks previously and he was starting show similar confidence.
As the runs piled up and Ongar hit 70 nerves among the more experienced members of the team were still frayed as they remembered the collapse against Woodford Green in 2007. Number 5 batsman Pinal knows no fear though and so was happily treating himself to a sly smoke as Bagga and Simsy made hay against the first and second change bowlers.
Calamity struck though as first Rakesh was bowled and Simsy got an outside edge and so Pinal and Sweeting were at the crease with 25 needed.
New boy Pinal has no fear of getting out and a decent eye and was soon making light work of the run chase with drives over mid on and through mid off, while Sweeting provided able support.
A little to late with just 6 runs needed SLH brought back the effective Sanderson. Pinal was unpreturbed however and cut his first ball upplishly through the vacant extra cover area. Finally Ongar were almost home and sealed it with four byes.
So another 18 points made their way to Love Lane and in the first week of June Ongar 2nd XI had doubled their entire win count for 2007.
