Ongar Cricket Club Sunday XI v Abridge on Sun 05 Aug 2007 at 2.00
Ongar Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets

Match report Summer finally arrived at 'The Lane' at long last, as did the villagers from Abridge. Ongar looking to revenge their loss of earlier on in the season at the home of Village. village skipper Stick won the toss and elected to bat, purely on the grounds that it was too bloody hot to field, and big hitting opening batsman Padfield soon began where he left off in the previous encounter, by dispatching the Ongar attack to all parts. Aussie paceman Brad being particular harshly dealt with. As usual the Abridge batting line up was looking a bit of a one man show, as Ongar were able to pick up wickets at regular intervals. Once Padfield was eventually caught, after a few shocking let offs (you know who you are!) for 63, only Johnson (33) offered any serious resistance. Once he was removed to a dubious looking high full toss. Stick(26) then decided to stupidly run himself out, and the Abridge innings finished in a rather tame fashion on 182-9 off their 40 overs. The pick of Ongars bowlers was easily the spin twins of Sam Adders 3-24 and Rakesh 1-17, the later turning the ball square at times.

The first half of Ongars reply was quite simply a nightmare, it might be kinder to put it down to sun stroke than to name and shame those involved. But after 13 overs Ongar found themselves 31-6. Yes 31-6, with all the young talent of Ongar back in the hutch, it was left to the old stagers to mount what would surely be the come back of the century. But come back they did, with Nobbler (68) and veteran Adders (69) showing that just by taking the singles on offer and hitting the bad ball for four, it was possible to keep the score ticking over at the required rate of 6 an over without taking any undue risks. What a magnificent partnership it was of 128 . Words simply do not do it any sort of justice, it was immense! Nobbler was finally undone more by exhaustion than anything else, with 29 still to go, 'Super' did a vital job holding up one end as Adders got to within 3 of victory before finally falling to a fantastic diving catch by Ashton. 'Super' now the senior partner with Bradders up the other end, quickly scampered the leg bye required, to secure a fantastic victory with 9 balls to spare. Horgan the best on show with the ball for 'The Bridge' with figures of 4-28, the other wickets shared between, Wood 2-41, Sam Cross 1-23, and Stick 1-33 (how do you feel Sam Sweeting!)

So, as last season, the honours end up even, with one victory apiece, between the two local rivals. I'm sure the Abridge players (and the skipper in particular, haha) will have a few sleepless nights about how this one got away. Perhaps just as importantly, the Ongar batsman should have a long hard look at themselves. You cant score runs if you dont occupy the crease, if anyone cant work it out on their own, just ask Adders or Nobbler!
