Abridge v Ongar Cricket Club Sunday XI on Sun 17 Jun 2007 at 2.00
Ongar Cricket Club Lost by 3 wickets
Match report
Ongar made the short trip over to the home of 'village' for their first of three Sunday fixtures this season on bright but overcast afternoon for this 40 over match. Thanks must go to Abridge for getting a wicket out after the very inclement weather over the past few days.
The all-important toss was won by Abridge and Ongar’s captain Shrek was asked to bat.
David Coles led his band of merry men out into the field of battle. With a mixture of youth and experience Ongar got of to a bad start losing Dan Shutts and Rakesh Bagga both for 0. It was then down to Chris Sims (47) and Sam Adcock (28) to steady the ship with the best Ongar partnership of the afternoon. Both their innings were curtailed when they tried to up the run rate and were both caught. Sam Sweeting then joined the Primary Club. Dave Hetherington (24), dropped first ball, then batted steadily including 2 big sixes before edging a low catch to the youthful Abridge keeper Barry Cook. Steve Adcock (20) and Jon Browning (11) batted sensibly together before Gravy was caught. Nigel Shutts joined Sadders hoping to push the score along but alas he did not trouble the scorers out for 0. Brad (Malinga) Stewart (0) was next to go unfortunately out Lbw on the seventh ball of an over, that’s Aussie luck for you mate! Captain Shrek (4 not out) joined Sadders at the crease to help the score along to 145 all out from 36 overs before Sadders was caught in front of the pavilion. A little more concentration and less trying to knock the cover of off the ball would surely have seen Ongar reach a more respectable score of 200 plus but it was not to be. Best of the Abridge bowlers was Greg (Fingers) Cross, 8-0-32-4.
Coughlan Caterers provided a gastronomic delight during the interval.
Tank commander Shrek led his Kamikaze troopers onto the field of battle and they were soon fetching the ball from all parts of the ground and beyond as Richard Padfield scored a very quick 50 out of a stand of 57 from only seven overs. His innings came to an end when Dan Shutts had him caught by Sweets for 57 that included two huge sixes, one of which went like an Exocet missile over the pavilion into the road. Shrek had saved Malinga to put Abridge under pressure, which he did, taking the wickets of Nick Elliott (10) and Paul Cook (10) assisted by Shutts Jnr who took the wickets of Ian Ashton (5), Nick Sam Cross (0). It was now going to be a tight game, but Captain Stick settled Abridge down as with plenty of overs to go he only had to score from the bad balls. He saw Daryl Wood (3) and Kieran Hurgan (13) return to the pavilion before David Powell joined him. There was a scare for Abridge when Capt Stick went down as if an Ongar sniper had shot him but he had only hit the ball into his ankle, ouch. Stick (27 not out) and Powelly (4 not out) saw Abridge home to a 3-wicket victory with four overs to spare. Best of the Ongar bowlers were Brad Stewart 8-2-12-2 and Danny Shuttleworth 6-0-14-3.
Both teams then adjourned to the bar for a few sups of ale and chats about the battles highs and lows of the game. Ongar did win a consolation prize when Capt Shrek picked London Bridge as his bus stop and won.
