Ongar Cricket Club Lost by 5 wickets
Match report
After the encouraging draw at home against Old Southendians the week previous Ongar rightly had high hopes for the short trip down to Old Brentwoods. However first team call ups had deprived the side of four of the previous week’s team.
Skipper Tom lost the toss and Ongar were inserted on what looked another good Old B’s batting track. Batting under cloudy skies Sam Adcock was promoted up the order after a good showing the previous week.
With Sam continuing his good form and enjoying the consistently even bounce he quickly started to accumulate runs, particularly on the leg side. At the other end Tom was a little out of sorts but intent on batting for a long time to ensure that the side batted for the 52 overs on offer. After Sam dominated an opening stand of 32 off 8 overs, Tom fell to a decent ball though playing a shot with no real conviction.
Next in came Sam Sweeting, who deservedly won promotion after some promising recent displays and the unavailability of more senior players. Unfortunately Sam was still in ‘presidents day mode’ and dollyed his second ball straight to mid off attempting a lofted four. Deano was next to join Sam A in the middle and looked like using all his nous and experience to lead the fightback. Unfortunately while Old Brentwoods have great facilities they should probably invest in Hawkeye technology as Dean was sent back to the pavilion LBW as the home team umpire failed to spot the ball hit Dean well above the knee roll as he strode forward.
With the side suddenly three down, Ongar hearts lifted as the forward defensive batting machine and immoveable object that is Peter Ellis strolled out to the middle. Sadly however Sam A's attacking innings came to an end as the Old B’s plan finally worked and he was caught for 31 in the deep by the extra man placed there by the canny Old B’s captain.
John Browning, playing his first game in three weeks was next out in the middle and very quickly the next back in the hutch as a leg stump Yorker second ball squeezed through his defences. Tough times call for tough characters and in the twos they come no tougher than Sidney Selner. Sid showed plenty of application and partnered Peter as the rebuilding started. With Old B’s bowling extremely tightly and Ongar reeling from the loss of five wickets, scoring was slow but at least the tide was turning as the Ellis Selner partnership went unbroken for 15 overs.
The resistance came to end however when Sid was caught at slip for a painstaking 7. Next in came Dave “Daggers” Ginnaw, another player back after a lengthy absence. Daggers initially continued Sid’s stoic defence but as the overs started to run out both Peter and Daggers saw the opportunity for a counter attack with Peter pulling and cutting anything short and Daggers unfurling some beautiful on drives as Old B’s resorted to an all spin attack.
The counter attack ended when Peter middled a flick off his legs straight to the short mid wicket and had to make his way back to pavilion for a fantastically solid 31. With three wickets left all thoughts turned to who could support Daggers through to the end of the 52nd over. Unfortunately no one could as Jamie Watson was caught at slip off a ripper of a leg break, Leo Wing failed to curb his attacking instincts and was caught and Nelly “Furtado” Hartington was bowled all ends up for a golden duck.
After a decent tea, albeit one where the sandwiches were best left untouched, Ongar set off in search of early wickets. Ongar struck early with Peter Ellis inducing the opener who had dropped down from the ones to chop one on to his stumps. A few overs later Sam Sweeting (who went someway towards making up for his poor shot selection with a fine day in the field) pounced from his now customary gulley position to snare the other opener.
However these wickets brought Old B’s overseas star to the crease , who showed that he’d come all the way from Australia , New Zealand or wherever with one shot. Unfortunately the one shot was quite a useful one and he crossed batted himself to a quite a few useful runs. With Sam bearing the brunt of the overseas charge a change of pace was on the cards with Sidney Selner being introduced from the Pavilion end. Sid’s off skidders did the trick with the Aussie trying his one shot, once too often and picking out Jon Browning, who held a sharp chance at mid wicket.
With the Aussie gone Ongar started to believe that there was maybe a sniff of at least a few unexpected points if not the win. With the Old B’s number four living a little dangerously with lofted drives over mid on and then mid off, Peter resorted to his slower ball and low and behold it worked again and Ongar had four wickets.
The fifth wicket pair were stifled by some good Ongar bowling and committed fielding but played some very sensible cricket to push the score along. However the pressure told and Peter bagged a deserved fourth with another slow ball which flew into the hands of a prescisely positioned Tom at a very straight deepish mid off.
From there on however Ongar couldn’t take any more wickets and Old B’s edged over the line for a loss of five wickets. After another disappointing display with the bat it was encouraging to see such a committed and skilful display in the field which made life much harder than expected for the strong and deep Old B’s batting line up.
