Ongar Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI v Old Southendians on Sat 21 Jul 2007 at 1.00
Match was Drawn

Match report After the crushing defeat at Hadleigh, Ongar were relieved to be back at the lane and welcomed back Adcock Snr, Lee Paris, Simmsy, Sid, Ross Darby and Sukks snr.

Even against one of the more consistent 2nd XI sides in the division the inclusion of the senior pros list brought hope to the hearts of the twos and so it showed on the pitch as Lee Paris and Peter Ellis started marathon spells of consistently probing bowling.

With Peter rolling back the years and tearing in from the pavilion end and inducing many a false shot from the opposition openers Lee matched Peter to show what a consistent performer he has become with a remarkable display of line and length.

With such tight bowling Ongar were able to crank up the pressure as opposing teams manage so successfully against us. Although wickets weren’t flowing the pressure was rising as Old Southendians were accumulating runs at barely two an over.

Eventually pressure told and Peter bowled the opener and took another wicket when Ross held on to the faintest of nicks which saw the opposition batsman walk before the umpire could raise his finger ( a rare sight these days). At the other end Lee was bowling just as well but without a breakthrough.

Just before drinks the heavens opened and after a few overs of increasingly heavy showers the teams went off and the covers came on. Pretty much as soon as they were on, the rain stopped and so the teams came back out on to the pitch after what proved to be an incredibly short but ultimately vital rain break.

After the short break Ongar continued where they left off with Lee and Peter continuing to build the pressure on the Old Southendians. After 38 overs changes needed to be made as both Peter and Lee started to tire in the surprisingly oppressive conditions whilst Old Southendians attempted to increase the run rate with their wickets in hand. On came Sid from the Castle end as Ongar attempted to make things harder by taking the pace off the ball. From the Pavilion end came Sam Adcock who’d been really unlucky with several dropped catches off his bowling the week before.

Given that Old Southendians had eight wickets in hand, the run rate was expected to increase in the last ten overs. However as risks were taken Ongar picked up three more wickets with Sid claiming an lbw and Tom taking a very low catch at extra cover, which sportingly both the Old Southendians umpire and batsman agreed was a catch despite nobody else realising what had happened. At the other end Steve A helped Sam A to a wicket with a stunning one handed catch at full stretch at mid on when the ball had appeared to have passed him by. A contender for catch of the season no doubt.

Despite the wickets Old Southendians had increased the run rate sufficiently to get up to 183 for 5 off their 52 overs.

After a solid debut tea from Sam Sweeting Ongar started to wonder what could happen if they got off to a good start. A good start is what they got with Steve A and Tom putting on a fifty stand in the second home game running. Both batsmen perished though as Ongar started to feel confident and look for quick runs to setup victory, Steve went first, skying an attempted drive, Tom followed shortly after as he mis read a slower ball.

With two down after a good start thoughts turned to the collapse against Epping, but Ongar showed that they had learnt from that debacle with Simsy and Ross both knuckling down and making 18 and 23 respectively before Ross was bowled and Simsy was caught behind.

Next in was Sam A who built on his 30 at Hadleigh to compile a brutal 47 which looked like propelling Ongar towards a first victory while Deano provided solid support at the other end. Unfortunately Sam’s innings came to an end three short of a deserved fifty as Old Southendians grew wise to his tactic of charging down the wicket and deliberately bowled a wide one which he couldn’t reach and he was sharply stumped. It was a real shame as Sam had shown he could finish the innings in style as he picked his gaps and worked the good balls and bludgeoned the bad ones.

With Sam out Lee was pushed up the order for one last push for victory but it was not to be as he was bowled and Deano and new Batsman Sukks ran out of overs. Ongar finished on 171 for 6 off 43 overs and victory was just out of reach. All in all it proved to be by far the best batting display in recent weeks, if not the season and Ongar were left ruing the three overs lost to the brief shower.
