Hadleigh & Thundersley v Ongar Cricket Club Saturday 2nd XI on Sat 14 Jul 2007 at 1.00
Ongar Cricket Club Lost by 192 runs

Match report Ongar made the long trip to play third placed Hadleigh and Thundersley, with a team barely recognisable from the previous week. Ongar called up four players from the threes and Jacko's son Ryan.

Ongar’s skipper Tom lost the toss and was soon strapping on the keepers pads and becoming the 2nd XI’s fourth keeper of the season, as Hadleigh surprisingly decided to bat first. Peter Ellis and Sam Adcock opened the bowling on a pitch perfect for batting. Both Peter and Sam bowled well but Sam in particular had no luck as two catches went down, another dropped agonizingly short of the energetic Richard Watson in the covers and only Hadleigh’s umpire will know why the left handed opener was given not out to a catch behind. Despite some confident batting by the Hadleigh top three, Ongar’s nagging accuracy paid off and Hadleigh found themselves 3-75. Unfortunately for Ongar this brought Hadleigh's talented Essex and England recognized youngsters to the middle, who preceded to make good use of the even bounce to send even good balls to all corners of the field. With Nelly’s spin proving a little inaccurate after a few weeks off and the Jackson medium pace duo trying manfully but only being able to take one further wicket (not helped by more dropped chances!) Hadleigh managed to accumulate a massive 277-4 dec from 39 overs with their no. 5, an Essex colt making an impressive 136 not out.

After a light tea, Ongar set about trying retrieve a little pride. Unfortunately Tom went early to a half-hearted appeal, a surprising lbw decision given by their umpire. Sam Adcock, promoted up the order took the dismissal in his stride and combined some resolute defence with some silky stroke play. Peter Ellis also promoted up the order on account of his penchant for front foot defence was proving an obstacle yet again but managed to nick a peach of a delivery from their opener. Sam Sweeting showed a liking for the lofted on drive and put on an entertaining partnership with S Adcock Jnr. All good things come to an end though, and Sweeting succumbed to a turning delivery from the spinner he’d plundered for three big fours. Sadcock followed soon after to the same bowler, but not before compiling a stylish 30. From there on in Deano picked up 16 of the final 17 runs scored by Ongar. Only Jacko Snr managed to trouble the scorers. Dean might have had a few more had he not had to watch H&T strangely put four fielders back on the boundary when he was on strike despite Ongar being five wickets down and over 200 behind. Back in the dressing room Jacko organized a singsong to raise morale and before long Ongar made a hasty retreat.
