Match report Ongar 2nd XI versus Epping

After the disappointments of previous weeks Ongar hosted the ‘ping’ with a heightened sense of belief that this could be the turning point in their season.

Winning the toss, skipper Tom rallied the team with an on field team talk pointed out Epping’s failings with bat and ball so far this season (Apparently he’d actually researched their form on their website – he should get out more!). As it was form didn’t matter as Peter and Lee bowled with pace and accuracy to turn up the pressure on the Ping’s top order.

Lee, starting from the Castle end which he has made his own bowled a marathon 17 overs unchanged while Peter steamed in from the Pavilion end for 13 unchanged overs. Between them they shared five weeks as the Epping top order couldn’t find a way to deal with Peter’s hostility and Lee’s accuracy.

With the Epping top order out of the way, bowling changes loomed as Ongar turned to Steve Adcock to take the pace off the ball and Sam Adcock to continue the seam examination of the Epping batting technique. Sam bowled 12 overs in all conceding just 39 runs and taking one wicket as he showed that he can be called upon at the end of an innings to keep the run rate down. At the other end Adcock Senior fared even better picking up two wickets and conceding 18 runs from his 8.3 overs as the ten men Epping were bowled out for just 148 off their 50.3 overs.

A good day in the field for Ongar capped off by a great run out initiated by Sam A who pounced from Square Leg to fire the ball straight to the waiting hands of bowler Steve A.

With Epping all out for 148 Ongar fancied their chances at tea, so much so that Peter Ellis retired to the shower for a mid game wash.

Ongar started watchfully after tea with Epping having in their ranks a couple of decent opening bowlers including one lanky left hander who extracted decent seam movement back in to both right handed Ongar openers Tom and Steve A. However as the shine wore off batting got easier by the over and both Tom and Steve played some attractive attacking shots which looked like laying the foundations for a first win of the season.

However after the partnership reached 61 disaster struck as Steve was bowled by Epping’s leg spinner. 3rd XI skipper Sukks joined 2nd XI skipper Tom at the crease and the chances looked good that one of them could play the captains innings that was needed. Sadly Tom got carried away against Epping’s off spinner after a straight four and tried to loft the next ball into the car park but only succeeded in finding mid off. The skipper later reflected that while the Australians generally chase small targets quickly he probably shouldn’t try.

The loss of Tom brought another experienced player to the crease as Ross Darby made his way out to join Sukks. As Maddog Ellis often remarks “one brings two” sadly for Ongar one brought three as Sukks was given out LBW. A decision which didn’t go down well particularly as he takes a leg stump guard and more importantly the inside edge onto the pads could be heard from the scorebox.

Wickets four, five and six fell quickly too as Deano middled one straight into the hands of mid on, Sam A tried to pull a short ball that didn’t really get up and Leo Wing played on to wide ball that he really could have left.

Sam Sweeting coming in at eight offered Ross some company and played sensibly, electing to leave balls he didn’t need to play as he sussed out the pitch and bowling. At the other end Ross was playing very sensibly, and when the opener came back on took twelve off an over thanks to a cut, a pull and a thick edge over the slips. However the renaissance didn’t last as Ross was out in unfortunate circumstances as he got a top edge to one of the spinners and was caught behind.

With Lee Paris in at nine and Peter back in his whites at ten Ongar still had very capable batsmen to come. However the hopes were fading rapidly as Sam Sweeting was bowled for three and after a couple of lusty blows Lee was caught at cover and Ongar were all out for 112.

So another defeat but one that felt much worse than those before as Ongar had looked so good at 61 for none, and with a little more application with the bat from the top of the order all the way down should have made it home with all the points. Still as long as the lessons were learnt there’ll be a chance to avenge this defeat in the future.
