Ongar Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Epping on Sat 08 Sep 2007 at 12.30
Ongar Cricket Club Won by 2 wickets

Match report At last, for some, it hadn't come a minute to soon...the last game of the season! Congratulations to the skipper, Big Dave, who managed to win only his fourth toss out of 16 this season, inviting The Ping to bat first, on a lovely late summers day. Ongar got off to the best possible start, with Rakesh precisely knocking middle stump clean out of the ground, whilst leaving leg and off peg, still perfectly intact. A very impressive sight! Unfortunately this only brought the equally impressive Dean Majeed to the wicket, who for the next hour or so, dispatched the Ongar bowling to all parts of The Lane, scoring exactly 100 from only 104 balls before finally being caught at long off by Nick Suker, the first of two skiers pouched by Suuks jnr. After that Ongar were able to at least take wickets, albeit at a rather expensive rate, with The Ping declaring their innings on 236-8 off only 42 overs! Ongars wicket takers on the day were Bradders 14ov 3-50, Rakesh 11ov 3-69
and Sidney Silner 6ov 2-45.

After tea, the Ongar opening pair of Suuks jnr and Rakesh got off to a flying start with 12 runs coming from the 1st over from Adams. The pair then proceeded to race to 33 from 5 overs, before, having already had a couple of near misses, Rakesh finally managed to successfully run himself out for 17. Lovey (0) was soon to follow, as for the next 7, yes 7 overs Ongar remained stuck on 33, thanks mainly to the introduction of Bickley. However, a useful stand of 52 between Suuks (24) and Dan Shutts(39) the laters score from only 29 balls, got Ongar back on track. Stick(50) from 48 balls (including a six!)
kept Ongar on course, but wickets were beginning to fall to the accurate bowling of Majeed snr, who trapped Micky, Nige and Powelly all LBW to add to the LBW of suuks jnr he had taken earlier. Ongar only needed 84 off the last 20 overs, but the task looked beyond them as Ongars No.10, Bradders joined his skipper at the crease at 161-8, with only Sidders in the hutch. But today was their day, and Ongar would not be denied. It soon became obvious that Ongar would pass the target set, if only they could keep the 9th wicket partnership intact, and despite one or two scary moments, Big Dave(39no) from 41 balls and Bradders, yes Bradders(40no) from only 37 balls, saw the boys home with 7 overs to spare, on a truly memorable day for Ongar. Wild celebrations ensued, in front of a large crowd that had spilled out from clubhouse after the rumour had filtered through to the watchers of the England rugby and football teams, that Ongar were actually going to win a game. Indeed, even on the Sunday morning whilst shopping in Sainsburys, young Thackers shouted at me from behind the cold meat counter - Heard you won a game, yesterday! Thats how important a moment in history had been made the day before, the whole town was talking about it. If there had only been an open topped bus available...

Seriously, thanks go to Epping, who finally produced the sort of declaration Ongar had waited all season long for, rather than completely batting us out of the game, and then complaining when it all ended a tame, boring draw. And Congratulations to the Ongar skipper, Big Dave, who finally got the win his efforts so richly deserved.
