Ongar Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v West Essex on Sat 11 Aug 2007 at 1.00
Match was Drawn

Match report Ongar played host to West Essex hoping not to repeat the reverse of earlier in the season at The Rolls. West Essex won the toss and elected to bat, on what was described by one of the umpires after the game, as the best wicket he had seen anywhere this season. Once again a big THANK YOU to Steve Adders, who is the man responsible for making it so!

West Essex quickly found themselves 23-2 with Rakesh and Brad both making early breakthroughs. However Ahmed (38) and Mohammed (49) were able to take the score past the 100 mark, before the introduction of Ongar spinner Sidney Selner, who not for the first time this season bowled a beautiful spell, but actually got the rewards he deserved on this occasion. With Nobbler in fine form upon his return behind the wicket, the scorecard was to have a very familiar look to it, with caught Clark, bowled Selner, appearing on 5 occasions, both were also able to claim a sixth victim apiece as Sidders finished with season best figures for any bowler in the 1st XI this season of 16ov 6-85. West Essex, as many teams, this season, showed no sign of declaring, going on to effectively bat Ongar out of the game, at tea, with their innings closing on 256-9.

After tea, Ongar set about their now familiar task of grinding the game out for a draw. We havnt given up hope that just once this season, the opposition might actually show some imagination in their declaration! And so, not for the first time and probably not the last, the Ongar batsmen, spent a rather unpleasant couple of hours, being told by the opposition fielders, how to bat, how not to bat, and why werent we all getting out so that we could give them all the points, if we couldnt get the runs! Nick Suker (31), yet again, looking a quality act and Micky Ayres, put together a stand of 71 for the opening wicket, until Nick was bowled by Nazir. With Simmsy (0) and Micky (25) soon quick to follow. Ongar found themselves in a spot of bother at 80-3. Big Dave (13), and Danny Shutts (16) both got in and then out again. And it was left to Stick (37 no) and Nobbler (38no). to bat out the remainder of the game. The latter capping off a magnificent all round display, looking back to his best in both departments of the game and surely not regretting his decision to give his beloved West Ham a miss this time. Ongar compiled their highest total of the season of 191-5, it was also the first time that batsman no. 8 hasn't had a knock and also the highest points tally of the season, with 7 points for the draw. With West Essex picking up 10 points.
