Ongar Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI v Old Brentwoods on Sat 28 Jul 2007 at 1.00
Match was Drawn

Match report Ongar played hosts to Old Brentwoods, a game that they firmly believed might turn their season around.

Old Brentwoods, full of confidence from their victory the previous week, won the toss and elected to bat, they were promptly 1-1 off 1 over as Bradders yorked open Muhammad first ball. Thats pretty much where normality ended for the next hour or so as the Old Boys no.3 Sarwar destroyed the Ongar attack, smashing 122 from only 73 balls including 21 fours and 1 six. He was eventually caught by Bradders at long on, off the bowling of 'The Golden Arm' Danny Shutts, who has an amazing habit of always getting rid of the oppositions best batsman. Another wicket quickly followed with Hussian LBW to the aforementioned Dan Shutts for a second ball duck. Rakesh chipped in with a couple too, and suddenly the Old Boys were in a bit of trouble at 146-5, albeit off only 24 overs, and therein was the problem as they had sufficient time not to be under any pressure, but could simply bat and the runs would surely follow, and they did. No. 8 Selby 53 off 57 balls and no. 9 Sarwar 45 off 38 balls, helped themselves from the now crestfallen Ongar attack.
Enabling the Old Boys to declare on a massive 290-9 off 48 overs. Ongars wicket takers, were Brad 3-56, Rakesh 2-64, Dan Shutts 2-20, Nigel Shutts 1-15 and Big Dave 1-21.

Why the Old Boys had thought that they might need as many as 290, was quite beyond comprehension, and all in reality that batting so long achieved was to gift Ongar an additional 2 bowling points.

After tea Ongar began the job of blocking for a draw, and were soon in trouble at 22-2 as the opening pair of Nigel Shutts(5) and Ross Doobers(2) were both quickly dismissed. Rakesh(17) was next to go, bowled by a wonder ball from Selby, that pitched outside leg stump and hit the top of off! The rest of the Ongar batsman were all able to reach double figures - apart from Dan Shutts (0), Stick (14) Micky Ayres (22), Madcock (25) Powelly (23 no) and Big Dave (22)no) the top score actually being extras (34), thus enabling Ongar to secure a draw.

So after 7 straight defeats, a glimmer of hope with now back to back draws, with todays points tally being Old Boys 11 Ongar 6, a good return on the day, despite spending most of it on the wrong side of a hammering, at least Ongar showed sufficient character on this occassion not to simply lie down and die, but battle it out until the end.
Ongar secured the draw, with the innings closing on 164-7 from 50 overs.
