Epping v Ongar Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 07 Jul 2007 at 1.00
Ongar Cricket Club Lost by 4 wickets

Match report Ongar made the short trip to Lower Bury Lane, the home of local rivals 'The Ping'. After all the heavy rain of the last month, the outfield was unsurprisingly moist under foot, and The 'Ping had no hesitation in inviting Ongar to bat first, on a very bowler friendly wicket. The skipper (21) was in no mood to hang around and wait for the conditions to claim him, as he smashed 6's in the 1st and 5th overs. Leaving Adams with figures of 0-20 off his 1st 3 overs. But that was easily as good as it got for Ongar, as, in the time honoured fashion, they collapsed dramatically from 27-0 off 6 overs to 44-5 off 22 overs. However, Stick (24) and Powelly (28) were able to rebuild to a certain extent, albeit rather slowly, with the thought that 150 would be a more than competive total. Stick finally holing out in the deep(ish) after 66 balls, but Powelly went on to be the last man out, facing a huge 93 balls, and even requiring a runner towards the end, after a slight hamstring pull, when he and Nigel had set off for a quick single. Well, not that quick. Might have been quickish, 25 years ago!!

The only other score in double figures was Matt Adcock (11) who had some how managed to go from no 2 to no 10, in the batting line up. So, Ongar batted on passed their 52 overs, finally being bowled out for 136 in the 60th over. The pick of the The Ping attack being the opeing pair of Adams 5-44 off 22 overs, and Bickley 3-28 off 16.4 overs. Who both proved yet again, that if you bowl straight, you will get wickets (well, certainly against Ongar, anyway).

After a very good tea, Ongar still believed that they had a chance on a still bowler friendly track. It wasn't to be Brad's best day as he struggled to find the right line and length, but Rakesh picked up 3 quick wickets, and with Matt Adcock, producing a very impressive spell of 6 ov 2-17. The Ping were staring down the barrel at 59-5. But, Ongar were now struggling for bowling options, Rakesh had bowled 10 overs straight off, and was tired, Matt had bowled his allowed 6 overs, and Brad was struggling for form. The ideal man, especially in the conditions was Powelly, but to sum Ongars season, he was injured and couldnt bowl. This ultimately, was to be the turning point of the game, Danny Shutts(5 ov 0-25), tried his hardest, but The 'Ping skipper Geoff Maynard, arguably the one class bat on display all afternoon, guided his side superbly through to the finish, with a superb 48, assisted by Bickley (15no).

It was a good hard fought contest, with Ongar being as competive as they had been at any point throughout the season so far. But, at the halfway point, Ongar are firmly routed to the bottom of the table, and still incredibly have been unable to claim a single batting point all season.
