West Essex v Ongar Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 09 Jun 2007 at 1.00
Ongar Cricket Club Lost by 105 runs

Match report It had been a few seasons since Ongar had had the pleasure of a trip to The Rolls, the home of today’s opponents West Essex. Some would say that it hadn’t been long enough, given the rather below par playing conditions. However, as one of the umpires quite correctly stated before the game, it was the same for both sides, and at least Ongar would only have to play on it once this season!

Ongar’s skipper Big Dave won the toss and had no hesitation in inviting the hosts to bat. Ongar started well, with Bradders finding himself with a new opening partner in Rakesh, who had opted to bowl 'seam up'. West Essex were soon in all sorts of trouble as Bradders quickly removed batsmen 1 and 3 for ducks, Rakesh not to be out done induced WE's no. 4 to drag one on for 1, and Big Dave, after looking like something out of Billy Smarts circus, managed to stop juggling long enough to hang onto a catch at mid on, again off the bowling of Rakesh, to reduce the hosts to 22-4 from the first 10 overs. Ongar were by now hoping for a quick kill, but Crompton, batting at 6, and opener Heard, began to battle hard and get their team back in the game. Heard (37) was eventually bowled by Sam Adcock, but Crompton continued to bat on very sensibly, assisted by all the lower order, who all showed that they were more than useful with the bat. Ongar dropped a couple of catches along the way, but both Brad and Rakesh were able to come back for their second spells and continue to take wickets, but Crompton was not to be denied finishing unbeaten on 65, and West Essex were able to post a very impressive 199-8 declared after their 52 overs. Brad finishing with 4-69 off 16 overs, Rakesh 3-45 off 16 overs, and Sam Adders with 1-26 off 10 overs, the wicket takers.

After tea, Ongar’s season of batting woes continued, although they found themselves in the similar position to West Essex after 9 overs on 21-4, Ongar were unable to manage a recovery as wickets continued to tumble unabated. As last week the two main contributions were to come from the El Capitano (18) and Danny Shutts (19), who incidentally were both out LBW to balls that hardly got off the deck. The only other score in double figures came from the bat of none other than the Chairman himself! Yes that’s Nigel (dad of Danny Shutts - for our younger readers!), who rolled back the years for an impressive 14. Certainly more impressive than his last appearance on this ground, which ended up with him heading the ball to the boundary, and a visit to the local A and E dept. Well done Nigel! However, Ongar were still unable to obtain that all too elusive batting point, being bowled out for 94. The fourth time in five games this season where they have failed to pass the three-figure mark.
