Ongar Cricket Club Sunday XI v Abridge on Sun 07 Aug 2005 at 2.30
Ongar Cricket Club Won 4 wickets

Match report It was evident from the moment Village skipper, Stick, won the toss and elected to bat that he was hell bent on revenge over his ‘native’ Club having been given the run around some 7 weeks ago. Six overs later and three wickets down with a mere 20 on the board, doubts had already set in whether he had made the right decision.

Padfield was sent harvesting in the first over for a duck and the dangerous Paul Cook was also back in the hutch as Stick gingerly walked to the crease. Surely it must have crossed his mind if he had done the right thing to cum down the apples and pears this morning. Leading from the front, Stick shared a 4th wicket partnership with WG ‘flowerpot’ Beard of 60 and a 5th wicket stand of 94 with Kings Cross. Beard went for 41 and Kings Cross 46, both avoiding jugs, whilst Stick having scored a very responsible 55 blatantly refused to ‘get them in’.

The last 5 wickets fell for a mere 10 runs as Humpy finished with figures of 6-30 including 4 in 4 balls as Village posted 184 all out.

After a gargantuan Nobbler tea, the OGB’s set about the moderate total set by the Village people but were soon on the back foot as Madcock looped up an easy caught and bowled that even Powelly could fail to ground. That demise brought OGB ‘old boy’ WSJ to the crease and normal service was soon restored. It was quite clear the Village people had carefully studied England’s catching exploits in the first test as they successfully matched their hero’s ability to spill anything in the air. How they should have paid more attention to Powelly’s techniques.

After a partnership of 75 with Maggsie, WSJ fell for a very stylish 38. Soon after, the Skunk then learned that once upon a time the Underground did start from Ongar and was bowled by one that didn’t get above stud height. The Beard then joined Maggsie and played the supporting role as the Aussie boy band steered the OGB’s nearer to victory. The Beard was ‘mugged’ by the Village Beard before a minor collapse as Sparky’s date with Willy Wonker beckoned and Humpy, still on a high from his bowling feat, still had his head in the clouds as he went for glory with an almighty heave only to hear the death rattle.

It was left to Nobbler to finally put the Village people out of their misery and to score the winning runs whilst Maggsie was left unbeaten yet again with 90 to his name. How the Village people must have loved bowling to Maggsie in the two games this year. He has amassed a colossal 240 and Village have failed miserably to get him out on either occasion.

A proud Club Captain also maintained his 100% record as the OGB’s won by 4 wickets with three overs to spare.
